FP2 LONG RUNS

Norris was quickest on Mediums.
Russell quickest on Softs.

Yet, VER impressed the most: just 0.074s/lap slower than NOR despite a significant top speed deficit! (~8km/h into T6 and T9).

ALO's consistency was insane: 12 laps within +-0.2s!

QUALIFYING TELEMETRY ANALYSIS - read on!๐Ÿ‘‡

1) Best Sectors:
- S1: HUL and STR were quickest! Less loaded wingsโžก๏ธthey had the best top speeds (328 and 327km/h). McL had the worst top speed (319) in the dry, hurting them here.
- S2 (fast corners): VER's best sector despite the possible floor damage. Still, just 3rd fastest: RUS and NOR were quicker.
- S3: the 'Mercedes sector'. NOR (high downforce) and HUL (low drag) were both quick.
Ferrari was slow in all sectors: in their best one (S1/SAI) they were still slower than ALB!

2) G-G Diagram (lateral and longitudinal grip):
Mercedes' braking grip was unmatched.
McL and RedBull had slightly less cornering grip, too

3) RUS vs NOR Lap:
- McLaren suffered from clipping (engine power reducing before the braking point as the battery empties): this is visible before T6 and T15.
Norris lost 1 tenth due to that alone!

BRITISH GP RACE PACE:

๐ŸŸขLewis Hamilton was quickest: the excellent performance by the driver and car under all weather conditions won them the #BritishGP! (and not just strategy).

Main takeaway points:
- Since solving their 'fundamental problem', Mercedes is now a potential race winner at most tracks.
- McL has great downforce, but drag is still higher than average. Very solid race car.
- RedBull is not dominant anymore, but still quick everywhere. In VER's hands, it can fight for wins everywhere. In PER's hands, it is mid-field at best
-Mercedes, McL, and RedBull have similar performance. Who will come out on top race-by-race will depend on track properties.
- Ferrari's chances to win additional races will depend on whether they can solve the bouncing issue quickly.
- The updated Haas seems to be a 'small monster'. It could be 5th fastest (behind Ferrari) from now on.

A 'top speed per lap' analysis reveals that young Joshua Pearce went for a more aggressive setup (less loaded rear wing)๐Ÿš€

More experienced @SonnyHayesF1, instead, traded some straight-line performance to have superior tyre management: he made the right call, finishing P5 in front of his teammate!๐Ÿ‘Œ

Crossing the speed trap data with the minimum cornering speeds reveals that the two cars had the same overall performance - the only difference seems setup-related... or not?๐Ÿ›

Red Bull has further reduced the (already minimal!) area of the RB20's vertical inlets... and the new design reminds of that of fighter jets!๐Ÿ’ก

The more complex shape could aim at reducing airflow separation (aerodynamicists' greatest enemy).

Per @NicolasF1i, this can be smartly framed as 'cooling change', therefore not impacting RedBull's (very limited) CFD time.

Ferrari's updates improved the car's low-speed grip, but the bouncing they induced at higher speeds (more downforceโ†”๏ธfloor closer to the ground) hurt its performance even more!โš ๏ธ

The team did a comparative test in FP2:
-Old Spec for SAI
-New one for LEC

LEC was consistently quicker in the slower corners (like T4 and T7), but the faster the corner the more his deficit became apparent.
He lost 6km/h of minimum cornering speed in Stowe. He also could only use 59% throttle (vs SAI's 94%!) through Copse.

The updates seem to improve the car's performance ceiling, but the bouncing is a severe problem.
If they can solve that, the car will be quicker than the Imola-spec... the question, however, is 'how'!

Ferrari is expected to repeat the tests in Hungary, a track where downforce is crucial.

In Austria, a 'bulge' appeared on the W15's nose: it is needed to accommodate the new third element (heave spring + damper), which allows the team to use a softer, more damped setup

This choice has some clear drawbacks: the bulge disrupts the airflow (more drag, less downforce), and the softer suspension prevents the floor from working as close as possible to its ideal height

In practice, though, porpoising (which does not appear in the wind tunnel, as the airflow is too slow for that) disrupts all that performance. After struggling for over two years, Mercedes went for a total change of approach - and the improvement has been massive since!

In Silverstoneโ€™s Q3, not only did โšช๏ธHaas have a significant (+5km/h) top speed advantage over ๐Ÿ”ดFerrari, but it was also 5km/h quicker through Copse, as HUL didnโ€™t have to lift at all!๐Ÿ’ก

Ferrari reverted to Imola-Spec due to the bouncing induced by the troublesome update package: still, he had to brake and lift the throttle through Copse.

In qualifying, Ferrari didnโ€™t have any clear strength vs Haas. In the race, however, Sainz showed superior pace.

Hungaryโ€™s lack of high-speed corners should mitigate their bouncing problem, and the additional downforce that the package provides should be useful in its many corners.

Still, Ferrariโ€™s prospects look much worse compared to post-Monaco.

Meanwhile, Haas could be the 5th fastest car on several tracks.

Probably the โ€˜properโ€™ racing track which requires the highest aero load!

Maximizing downforce is needed to be competitive in its numerous medium-speed corners, while high drag is not a deal-breaker on its single, short straight.

All teams are using their most loaded rear wings (Monaco-style):
- downforce is critical to be quick in the many corners;
- high drag is not a deal-breaker (single, short, DRS-assisted straight).

RedBull, Mercedes, and Alpine feature a very cambered lower plane, whose central part points upwards: very peculiar.๐Ÿ’ก
