За более чем десятилетие незавершенной революции и гражданской войны в Сирии сирийские активисты, оказавшиеся в изгнании, принимали активное участие в организации протестных движений в других частях света. Наконец, в конце 2024 года режим Башара Асада пал, что позволило им начать возвращение на родину.
Одним из проектов, в создании которого помогли сирийские эмигранты, стала сеть «Народы хотят» (Peoples Want) — международное объединение организаций и коллективов, стремящихся развивать «интернационализм снизу». On July 13, 2019, Willem Van Spronsen was killed by police while taking action to disable the fleet of buses that serve the Northwest Detention Center, a private immigration detainment facility in Tacoma, Washington.
Willem's courageous action took place in response to Donald Trump announcing a surge in ICE activity. Afterwards, an ICE official reported that it compelled the agency to move more slowly and cautiously, likely protecting many communities.
Everyone should read or re-read Willem's final statement today:

Four people have died at the hands of ICE over the past eight days.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was murdered by an ICE officer on July 7, 2026, in Houston, Texas, during a vehicle stop while driving his construction crew to work.
Joan Sebastian Guerrero was murdered by an ICE agent on July 13, 2026, in Biddeford, Maine, during a vehicle stop.
Jesus Manuel Arenas-Silva died on July 13 while being transferred between detention facilities in Georgia. Apparently, ICE agents intentionally denied him access to life-saving medication he depended on.
On July 14, a 28-year-old man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer in Florida while fleeing ICE agents.
Stop them before they kill again. Abolish ICE.

The poet Juvenal wrote that the people of ancient Rome were bribed with bread and circuses to accept the end of democracy and the establishment of the dictatorship known as the Roman Empire. The classic playbook to accustom people to autocracy is to meet their material needs while channeling their attention towards activities that substitute for self-determination.
Donald Trump is trying to accomplish something more unusual: he aims to preside over the destruction of the last vestiges of the social safety net and the impoverishment of the middle class while buying off his support base with entertainment alone.
His administration has not bolstered the economy but further destabilized it, as if intentionally rendering people more precarious, desperate, and exploitable. In return for this, we are supposed to content ourselves with watching the violent reality television gameshow of his presidency.
