While it had a much smaller membership (some 500–600) and far scarcer resources than Europe-Action, Occident made its mark as the main activist group on the extreme right in the 1960s. This was due primarily to its ‘commando’ actions against left-wing students, PCF offices, immigrant associations, anti-colonialists and other ‘enemy’ targets, such as the Vietnamese Consulate-General in Paris. The Vietnam War had replaced the Algerian War as the battleground against communist expansionism, and Occident proclaimed its mission to ‘Defend the West wherever it fights’.

The British Movement lads who recently faced dawn raids and arrests for celebrating Hitler’s birthday with a swastika cake in a pub should be released with no further action immediately. This is clearly politicised policing. If they had a cake with a hammer and sickle on it instead, nobody would have batted an eyelid. I don’t think it was wise to do what they did and personally I think if you want to do that, do it at home instead, but I certainly don’t think it’s a matter for the police or that it should be illegal. Actually I find it quite pathetic that the police are involved.

In a striking move that ends a nearly four-decades-old relationship between the federal government and the Episcopal Church, the denomination announced on Monday (May 12) that it is terminating its partnership with the government to resettle refugees, citing moral opposition to resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa who have been classified as refugees by President Donald Trump’s administration.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the Episcopal Church’s decision “raises serious questions about its supposed commitment to humanitarian aid.” She argued “Afrikaners have faced unspeakable horrors” and are “no less deserving of refugee resettlement than the hundreds of thousands of others who were allowed into the United States during the past Administration.” Kelly added: “President Trump has made it clear: refugee resettlement should be about need, not politics.”

The Trump administration has otherwise all but frozen the refugee program, with Afrikaners among the few — and possibly only — people granted entry as refugees since January.

On 7 December 1969, the London Observer published the text of a secret communication from the Director General of the Greek Junta’s Foreign Ministry to the Greek Ambassador in Rome.

Roughly 5,000 young activists represented the total strength of ON. They were mostly students based in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Nice. ON became an umbrella organisation keeping together different currents; it also published the periodical Pour un Ordre Nouveau (For a New Order). In ideological terms, ON was an ultra-nationalist, anti-capitalist and anti-Marxist movement. It attacked liberalism and, like the MSI-DN, promoted an archetypical European ‘third way’. The party manifesto called for the defence of national traditions, a strong state and a presidential regime. ON also tried to exploit the apocalyptic image of a new wave of north African immigrants assaulting the national borders and starting to counter-colonise metropolitan France. In spite of internal divisions ON decided to contest elections, starting with the 1971 Paris city council campaign. As a militant suggested, ‘we want to build a large party, like the Italian MSI, which we have set up as a model for ourselves’.

German activists were stoppend and probably detained when they wanted their flight to Italy for the Remigration Summit.

Composed, in its heyday, of around 1,500 members, mostly students, Occident had distinguished itself in the Latin Quarter through street fights against leftist activists, its vocal support for French Algeria, and a deep-felt anti-Gaullism that had ingratiated it to those defeated by the Liberation. With Occident’s disintegration, some of the movement’s leaders, like Alain Madelin and Patrick Devedjian, put aside iron bars and brass knuckles to lead a more temperate existence in the ranks of the law faculty or Sciences Po—these sharp minds went on to have brilliant careers as conventional right-wingers. For others, the fight continued within the GUD (Groupe Union Droit, later known as Groupe Union Défense), managed by one of Occident’s main leaders, Alain Robert, who established this fallback structure in response to a call to action from the newly orphaned members of the now-dissolved movement.
