Before Identitarianism: European Identity in the European Far Right
by Marta Lorimer

Far right parties are frequently defined as Eurosceptic, however, the reality of their engagement with Europe is more complex. While frequently opposing the EU, these parties claim allegiance to โ€˜Europeโ€™ as a civilizational project. This chapter argues that far right parties have long conceived of Europe in terms of an identity. The argument is illustrated empirically through the analysis of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) and the Rassemblement National (RN). The analysis shows that since the 1970s, the two parties thought of Europe as a distinct civilisation and claimed to belong to that civilisation. However, it also shows that in the case of the RN, this understanding of Europe increasingly clashed with the project of European integration, leading the party to develop a โ€˜pro-Europe, anti-EUโ€™ stance. The MSI/AN did not adopt a similar position, remaining broadly collaborative in its stance towards EU integration.

[FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE]

Since Emmanuel Macron came to power in 2017, all indicators of poverty have been on the rise. The right to housing and access to property are becoming increasingly difficult. Inflation on basic necessities is constantly rising, not to mention the price of energy. Outside of major urban centers, work is becoming scarcer every day, while workers' rights are being undermined. All of this is not the result of chance, but stems from the will of nomadic and globalized castes, who seek to exploit our people to the very dregs. Whether international oligarchies, corrupt politicians, or foreign groups, the French are always the first victims. We therefore hope for the emergence of a popular and national state, by and for the people, to restore the dignity of the despised French!

NEW AVANGUARDIA TORINO CAMPAIGN:
EUROPE, NATION, REVOLUTION!

We have decided to use a motto as dated as it is iconic for our new campaign.
A motto that highlights the importance of unity among European peoples, which we nationalists have the duty to build, for the creation of a true Europe of Homelands, free from the chains of foreign imperialisms.
A Europe that must be a power against the bureaucrats, speculators and Zionists who sit in Brussels today.

With this slogan we also want to remember how important it is to actively and militantly defend our local, national and European identity, and our Greco-Roman roots, today threatened culturally by LGBT-gender and anti-fascist tendencies, and physically by mass immigration and Islamization.

This motto has been, and still is today, the motto of militant youth who do not stand by and watch and fight for their city, for their nation and for the Old Continent!

๐Ÿ“‰ In a world where traditional economic models often seem inadequate to meet contemporary challenges, autonomism presents itself as a promising alternative. From a nationalist-revolutionary perspective, communities whose historical existence and autonomy are threatened can only reject this Janus-shaped paradigm of capitalism and socialism.

๐Ÿด Faced with the liberal-Marxist paradigm in which we live, we will have the pleasure of welcoming Marc Gastouรฉ, from the Georges Valois Institute, to discuss the political and economic philosophy of autonomism, which advocates the autonomy of communities and individuals while seeking to promote sustainable development, social equality, and solidarity. Unlike the extremes of globalized capitalism and state collectivism, autonomism offers a middle ground that values โ€‹โ€‹local initiative, empowerment, and respect for environmental resources.

โ€œThere is no socialism without the nationalization and socialization of industries, the expropriation of landed property with the creation of cooperative agricultural companies, the nationalization of banks and credit institutions, the limitation of property rights to goods for use and consumption, the removal of the press from the control of private capital, the total cessation of the exploitation of man by manโ€

In its day, Italian Fascism was one of the most advanced and progressive regimes in its social measures. The corporatism of the Twenty Years, in terms of what was valid in it, should be interpreted in the context of an organic and anti-Marxist idea, and therefore outside of everything that can be legitimately called โ€˜socialismโ€™. Exactly โ€” but only โ€” to this extent could Fascism have been a โ€˜third wayโ€™, a possibility offered to European civilisation, opposed to both Communism and capitalism.

More than a decade after his suicide, Venner continues to cast a long shadow over French politics. Last Sunday, the National Rally, the party of Marine Le Pen, won a resounding victory in the first round of the legislative elections. Itโ€™s now on the brink of power. This would have been impossible without Vennerโ€™s influence. He theorised the political strategy โ€” often called dรฉdiabolisation (de-demonisation) โ€” that normalised the French far-Right.

Venner had been mulling this strategy for a while. Back in 1959, when he had founded the Nationalist Party, a violent group which would soon be dissolved, Venner had told new recruits that they should be careful about what they said in public. โ€œNever discuss subjects that may shock newcomers by the way you present them,โ€ he had warned them. โ€œFor example, the mรฉtรจque problem must never in a presentation or a conversation be approached with the perspectives of the crematorium or the soap dish.โ€ In other words, never say that you ultimately want to exterminate all mรฉtรจques. When you are a fascist, you can kiss but you can never tell.

Shortly after leaving jail in 1962, Venner published his pamphlet. Titled Pour une critique positive (Towards a Positive Criticism), it became a self-help manual for generations of French far-Right activists, for whom Venner is the closest thing they have to an Antonio Gramsci. With his bold, iconoclastic text, he laid the ideological groundwork for the National Rally to become the most popular party in France. And he pioneered the strategy of dรฉdiabolisation that has been at the heart of Marine Le Penโ€™s political career.
