As Zelensky’s visit to the U.S. ends in diplomatic tension, one lesson becomes clear: Europe must not look across the ocean for salvation.

For too long, America has dictated how Europe should live, think, and govern itself. Washington was the one that pushed Europe into the left-liberal corner, rejecting traditions, cultures, and identities. The current crisis shows that even in matters of security, the interests of Europe are secondary. If Ukraine cannot secure guarantees, then what can the rest of Europe expect? The false belief in American goodwill is gone.

Europe’s future lies in its own hands — no one else will protect our lands, our people, and our heritage. In a world of fleeting alliances, Europe must awaken to its historical role as the defender of its own civilization. There is no other time but now, no other duty but to defend the Eastern frontiers of our cradle. To delay is to betray our ancestors and endanger our descendants.

Sovereignty, as taught by Cato the Younger, is born not from compromise but from the ability to say "no" — like the Venetian Doges, who chained the lagoon to block foreign fleets. Europe needs a Third Position: not to negotiate with those who see us as a colony, but to transform borders into altars of power, as did the Prussian Junkers. Our strength lies in the autarky of spirit.

Last month, the pridefully left-wing management of the storied 19th-century Parisian theatre Gaité Lyrique, owned by the pridefully left-wing Paris council and traditionally the home of operettas, digital arts and musical performances, staged a free conference on ‘reinventing the refugee welcome in France’. The organisers literally invited their own downfall: 200 West African migrants who apparently felt very welcome indeed and refused to leave.

Obviously, this fiasco is a metaphor for European immigration more generally.

The Martel Division, which had been under scrutiny by French intelligence services for several months, is part of a burgeoning network of similar organizations, stemming from France's radical identitarians or extreme Catholics. These groups are believers of racist conspiracy theories, such as that of the "great replacement" of white, Catholic European populations by those from African and North African immigrant backgrounds, and they champion violence as the only means of winning this "race war" to which they aspire. The dissolution decree states that "the group organizes combat training" and "promotes the use of [non-firearm] weapons in the confrontations that it encourages."

Just a few dozen members strong, most of whom are based in Paris, the Martel Division – which was briefly called Légionnaires Paris – is partly the continuation of another group, Zouaves Paris. This organization was dissolved in January 2022 for the same reasons, notably following an attack on anti-racist activists at a December 2021 campaign rally by far-right pundit Eric Zemmour in Villepinte, just north of Paris. It is also close to the Paris branch of the Group for Union and Defense (GUD) in Paris, another violent far-right group that was very active in the 1970s…

Rephrasing unacceptable concepts

A number of rare movements and theorists have attempted to envision an alternative Europe. After the war, Oswald Mosley (1896-1980), the British leader of fascism in England in the 1930s, published two works in which he put forward the idea of "Europe a Nation." Inspired by the Nazi New Order, this idea of a European nationalism brought together nations presented as equals. Mosley's writings went on to inspire groups such as Jeune Europe ("Young Europe"), which British historian Roger Griffin described as "Eurofascist." From the 1960s onwards, this movement, originally from Belgium but built as an international, promoted a "pan-European utopia."

However, this right-wing pro-European vision crashed up against the vigor of nationalism, and found little success, whether in radical circles or among the general public. More enduring, however, was the influence of the French New Right, a far-right political school of thought interested in the idea of a "civilizational Europe." Indeed, the members of the Research and Study Group for the European Civilization (GRECE), founded in 1968-1969 around nationalist writers Jean Mabire and Dominique Venner, the writings of which are still published in the French journal Eléments pour la Civilisation Européenne ("Elements for the European Civilisation"), presuppose the existence of a culture that is specific to the continent and threatened with decline.

This elaborate conception of Europe as an entity to be defended serves as the underpinnings for rephrasing far-right concepts. "After the Second World War, racism and the idea of discrimination based on race became largely unacceptable in the West," said Périne Schir, a doctoral student in political philosophy at the Université de Rouen. Faced with this, the New Right tried to redefine the "human groupings" that it aimed to distinguish from one another, using non-biological terms to avoid accusations of racism, and from then on began to speak of "ethnic groups," "nations" and "cultures."

"These are certainly presented as being equal to one another, but also as having to remain separate, at the risk of of dissolving and disappearing. This is what the New Right calls ethno-differentialism, or ethno-pluralism," said Schir, who is also a research fellow at the Illiberalism Studies Program at George Washington University.

Indeed, while this “European civilization” can be imagined as being atheistic, pagan or Christian, depending on the author, it is always a homogeneously white and anti-Muslim Europe. The concept of ethno-differentialism is first and foremost a tool for opposing multiculturalism and immigration, supporting the idea that both threaten the survival of European and national cultures. Moreover, these two cultural levels are not seen as mutually exclusive: "The idea is to try to think of cultural zones that go beyond the strict framework of the nation; but this idea of European civilizational unity is always based on local specificities, be they French, Italian, German, etc.," said Schir.

The ideology of the NPD has been described as consisting of the following elements: (1) historical national egotism, including the rejection of all criticism of German responsibility for World War II and the conduct thereof; (2) statism, or state absolutism; (3) biological determinism and race collectivism; (4) a mixture of corporatism and plebiscitary democracy; and (5) cultural pessimism. These issues are not far from orthodox Nazi views and policies, but some of the positions of the New Right seem to give them a modern gloss: racism now may be called “ethnopluralism” which, however, denies the universality of humankind on an allegedly scientific basis. The prejudice against foreign workers is rationalized as a fear that the Germans may be biologically overwhelmed by alien races. Then there are some new, or not so new elements, such as the movement for a “European nation,” perhaps déjà vu as the “defense of the occident” against alien intrusions from the Soviet Union or America. The New Right even speaks of a “European socialism,” meaning apparently a solidaristic Volksgemeinschaft of all Europeans.
