#France: President Emmanuel Macron (RE-RE) has decided not to appoint Lucie Castets (*) as Prime Minister and rules out any left-wing government in the name of "institutional stability". He is set to launch new consultations on Tuesday and urges the PS (S&D), LÉ (G/EFA) and the PCF (LEFT) to "cooperate with the other political forces".

Lucie Castets was the Prime Minister candidate of the Nouveau Front populaire (NFP-LEFT|G/EFA|S&D), which holds a relative majority with 193 seats in the National Assembly.

#France: President Emmanuel Macron (RE-RE) has appointed Michel Barnier (LR-EPP) as Prime Minister and asked him to form a government.

A former Member of Parliament, minister, and Member of the European Parliament, Michel Barnier is best known for his role as the European Commission’s Head of the UK Task Force between 2019 and 2021.

With a combined 213 seats, Ensemble, the presidential coalition, and LR are still short of an absolute majority but would be the biggest bloc in the National Assembly. During the past legislature, Ensemble governed with a de facto external support from LR.
