The difference in language between the continental Celts and Germanics in pre-Roman times was not as big as we imagine it to be. It was not as different from each other as modern Gaelic and modern English. Also not as big of a gap as French vs German.
It was probably more like Dutch vs German or maybe Danish. Not the same and with a lot of differences, but still similar enough so that people would’ve recognized and probably also understood each other surprisingly well.
