Cybersecurity Technologies for Internet-of-Things (IoT) and 5G mMTC platforms

The research activity will focus on the study, use and implementation of cybersecurity technologies in the field of communications in Internet-of-Things systems and massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) on 5G platforms. The technologies of interest will concern the security of communication stacks (TCPI / IP, ZigBee, 5G, etc.), software security (reverse-engineering techniques, binary exploitation & protection), hardware security and the adoption of ad-hoc cryptographic techniques for IoT systems.
In particular, the activity will concern the adoption of the aforementioned technologies in industrial operating contexts, with particular attention to their use in the processes of validation and verification (V&V) of hardware and software systems.

We are looking for one motivated researcher (M.Sc. or early PhD) to join our team.

Your tasks:

• Conduct pioneering and applied research in the IIoT competence center in the areas mentioned.

The role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to contribute to the Innovate UK-funded SYNERGIA project on Cyber Security for the Internet of Things.

SYNERGIA is devising, developing and will and demonstrate a novel secure-by-design, endpoint-to-core IoT platform for large-scale networks of low-power resource-constrained devices. The platform will provide users with distributed processing capability at the Edge as a service. Project outcomes will be showcased at two demonstration events.

You will join the existing team and will contribute to an ambitious research programme and industry R&D on scalable, secure configuration management and control of IoT systems; secure connectivity for battery-powered resource-constrained devices; edge-based machine learning for cyber security of IoT systems.

You should apply if

You are excited about undertaking high technology readiness, applied research.
You have a track record in one or more of the following areas:
Systems and/or Network Security (ideally with an interest in Intrusion Detection Systems)
Machine Learning (ideally with an interest in distributed/federated machine learning or embedded machine learning)

🔔🔔Scientific Engineer on AI-guided security assessment of 5G IoT Networks

Main activities
The engineer will thus focus on the three steps that can be grouped into two main tasks:

Topology discovery and monitoring probes for 5G networks. We can rely on state-of-art tools [9] to extend them with 5G protocols.
Vulnerability discovery in IoT devices by developing automated fuzzing tools. We will employ AI/ML techniques to build automated fuzzing processes dedicated to IoT protocols employed in 5G networks.
Refine and map the discovered vulnerabilities onto a real deployment of IoT and then derive an overall assessment score of its components.
This work will be achieved in the context of an Inria Project with other partners that aims to evaluate and test 5G technologies before the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

Skills
– Required qualification: Engineer diploma in computer science
– Good expertise in networking, cybersecurity, machine learning
– Knowledge in NLP method will be appreciated
– Computer skills: familiar with Linux, Python programming

Qualification we require:
The successful candidate is expected to have a MSc/MEng computer science (1st or 2:1), or Embedded systems/communications engineering (1st or 2:1), or similar subject. Or Good Honours degree (1st or 2:1) in Computer Science/ Embedded Systems (with relevant or industrial experience). Higher degree is desirable. A background or knowledge and industrial experience in Embedded system engineering would be beneficial to support the Associate in understanding the Trumeter business.

The Associate will need also need a high level of experience in programming, with expertise in IoT platform, web development, cloud computing, and database systems using languages such as Python, Java, MySQL, or PHP.

Application requirements:
Expertise in IoT networking architecture and protocols, wireless communication technologies and hardware, microcontrollers, sensors, and interface chips.
Knowledge and Experience in Analogue/digital electronics and PCB design would be beneficial but not essential
Experience working with RF and radio access technologies for IoT (including wireless standards and LPWAN technologies such as Bluetooth and LoRaWAN)
Enthusiastic with strong self-motivational and leadership qualities
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex concepts to a wide-ranging audience.
Good command of written and spoken English
Eagerness to learn and develop knowledge in emerging technologies
Ability to work to deadlines, both individually and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks
Experience of software packages (e.g. Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services, IoT Platforms) and network security would also be beneficial.
