'Wish' is a verb which talks about unreal or imagined situations. Because of this, it has some unusual verb patterns:

๐ŸŒA present wish
When we want to make a wish about a present situation, we use wish and a past simple or continuous verb.

โ™ฆ๏ธI don't have my umbrella. I wish I had my umbrella.

โ™ฆ๏ธShe doesn't know the answer. I wish she knew the answer.

โ™ฆ๏ธYou're at work, but you wish you were playing football, right?


๐ŸŒA past wish
When we want to make a wish about a past action or situation, we use wish and the past perfect [ had+past participle verb].

โ™ฆ๏ธI'm so tired. I wish I had slept for another hour last night.

โ™ฆ๏ธShe knows she made a mistake. She wishes she hadn't been so silly.

โ™ฆ๏ธYou were right. I shouldn't have quit my job. I wish I had listened to you.

They are living somewhere about here.

๐Ÿ”— 1. Dead and Deadly

In certain expressions, the adverb dead is used to mean exactlycompletely or very.

โ™ฆ for example: dead certain, dead slow, dead right, dead drunk etc.

Deadly is an adjective. It means fatalcausing death.
The adverb for this meaning is fatally.

Cyanide is a deadly poison.
She was fatally injured. ( NOT deadly injured)

๐Ÿ”— 2. Fine and Finely

The adverb fine means well.
โ™ฆ โ€˜How are you?โ€™ โ€˜I am fine.โ€™

The adverb finely is used to talk about small careful adjustments and similar ideas.
โ™ฆ a finely tuned machine

๐Ÿ”—3. Free and Freely

When used after a verb, the adverb free means without payment.

โ—‡Buy two shirts and get one free.
โ—‡Can I eat free in your restaurant?

Freely means without limit or restriction.
โ—‡Speak freely.

๐Ÿ”—4. Hard and Hardly

The adverb hard means heavily, severely or with difficulty.
โ—‡You must work hard.

Hardly means almost not.
โ—‡I have hardly any money left.

๐Ÿ”—5. Late and Lately

The adverb late has a similar meaning to the adjective late.
Lately means a short time ago and recently.
โ—‡We will be late for dinner.
โ—‡It is getting late.
โ—‡I have not read anything lately.

๐Ÿ”—6. Most and Mostly

Most is the superlative of much. It is used to form superlative adjectives and adverbs.
โ—‡Those who have the most money are not always the happiest.
โ—‡What pleased me most was his helping nature.

In a formal style, most can mean very.
โ—‡This is a most (=very) interesting book.

Mostly means chiefly, generally or in most cases.
โ—‡My friends are mostly non-smokers.

๐Ÿ”—7. Real and Really

In informal American English, real is often used before adjectives and adverbs. It means the same as really.
โ—‡That was real nice. (=really nice)
โ—‡She sings real well. (=really well)

๐Ÿ”—8. Sure and Surely

In an informal style, sure is often used to mean certainly. This is common in American English.

โ€˜Can I borrow your bicycle?โ€™ โ€˜Sure.โ€™

surely used to show that you think something must be true, especially when people seem to be disagreeing with you:

โ—‡ Surely we canโ€™t just stand back and let this happen?
