Types of earthing systems:

PART - 1

Earthing (grounding) is an essential electrical safety practice in which exposed conductive parts of electrical equipment and installations are connected to the earth through a low-impedance path. Its primary purpose is to safely carry fault current, leakage current, and transient overvoltages into the ground while keeping touch voltages within safer limits.

The image presents several commonly encountered earthing arrangements and applications, including electrode-based systems and equipment/bonding arrangements.

🔹 major types of earthing

1️⃣ plate earthing
Uses a buried copper or galvanized-steel plate as the earth electrode. It is traditionally used for electrical installations where a plate electrode is suitable.

2️⃣ pipe earthing
A perforated metal pipe is installed vertically in the ground and surrounded by suitable backfill. It is a widely used conventional earthing arrangement.

3️⃣ rod earthing
A conductive rod is driven into the soil to provide a connection to earth. Multiple rods may be used where a lower earth resistance is required.

4️⃣ strip earthing
A copper or galvanized-steel strip is buried horizontally or installed in a trench and connected to the equipment or earthing network.

5️⃣ wire earthing
Uses a suitable earthing conductor or wire to establish the electrical connection between equipment and the earth electrode/grid.

6️⃣ mesh earthing
A network of interconnected conductors forms an earthing mesh. It is particularly useful for substations, industrial plants and installations requiring controlled touch and step potentials.

7️⃣ chemical earthing
Uses an electrode together with conductive, moisture-retaining backfill to help maintain a stable earth connection, particularly where soil conditions make conventional electrodes less effective.

8️⃣ ring earthing
An earthing conductor is arranged in a ring around a building or installation and connected to the grounding system at appropriate points.

9️⃣ earth mat earthing
A buried grid or mat of interconnected conductors provides a large contact area with the surrounding soil. It is commonly associated with substations and large electrical installations.

🔟 foundation earthing
Earthing conductors are incorporated into the foundation or building structure, providing a distributed grounding path when properly designed and bonded.

1️⃣1️⃣ structural steel earthing
Suitable structural steelwork can be bonded into the grounding system where electrical continuity and applicable standards permit, helping maintain equipotential bonding.

1️⃣2️⃣ lightning protection earthing
Provides a low-impedance path for lightning-current discharge through the lightning protection system and into the earth.

🔥 Fire protection — helps reduce hazards associated with electrical leakage and fault currents.

🌩 Surge & lightning protection — provides a discharge path for transient currents when properly integrated with surge and lightning protection systems.

📡 Noise reduction — correctly designed grounding and bonding can help reduce unwanted electrical interference in sensitive systems.

🏭 Equipment protection — helps protect electrical and electronic equipment against certain fault and transient conditions.

🔧 important design considerations

✔️ Soil resistivity
✔️ Required earth resistance/impedance
✔️ Electrode material and corrosion resistance
✔️ Conductor cross-section and thermal withstand
✔️ Fault-current magnitude and clearing time
✔️ Touch and step potential
✔️ Lightning and surge-current requirements
✔️ Connections, joints and mechanical integrity
✔️ Applicable electrical codes and standards

⚡️ How Does a Transformer Magnetic Oil Gauge (MOG) Work?

The Magnetic Oil Gauge (MOG) is an important monitoring device installed on the conservator tank of an oil-filled power transformer. Its primary function is to provide a visual indication of transformer oil level and, where equipped, initiate a low-oil-level alarm.

🔧 Working Principle:

1️⃣ Oil Level Changes
Transformer oil expands and contracts with temperature, causing the conservator oil level to rise or fall.

2️⃣ Float Mechanism
A float inside the conservator follows the oil level and moves through a mechanical linkage.

3️⃣ Gear Mechanism
The float movement is converted into rotary motion through the internal gear mechanism.

4️⃣ Magnetic Coupling 🧲
The internal magnet transfers rotational movement to the external magnetic mechanism through the sealed tank wall, allowing the pointer to indicate the actual oil level without a mechanical shaft penetrating the tank wall.

5️⃣ Low-Level Alarm 🚨
When the oil level reaches a critical low point, the alarm mechanism operates a switch and sends a signal to the control/protection system.

✅ Key Benefits:
• Continuous visual oil-level indication
• Sealed magnetic transmission
• Helps minimize the risk of leakage through the indication mechanism
• Low-level alarm capability
• Supports reliable transformer condition monitoring

💡 Engineering Insight:
A simple combination of float movement + mechanical gearing + magnetic coupling + electrical alarm provides an effective and reliable method for monitoring transformer oil level.

⚡️ 11kV/0.4kV Distribution Substation | 25kVA 3-Phase Transformer

This 3D model illustrates a 25kVA, 3-phase, 11kV/0.4kV distribution substation installed on an 8-meter PCC pole. The setup demonstrates how medium-voltage power is stepped down and distributed safely to low-voltage loads.

🗝 Key Components & Their Functions: 👇
✅ 1. Lightning Arrester (LA)
Protects the transformer and electrical equipment from high-voltage surges caused by lightning and switching events.
✅ 2. Hot Line Clamp
Provides a secure electrical connection between the overhead conductor and the equipment while allowing maintenance without disconnecting the line.
✅ 3. Disc Insulator
Provides electrical insulation between the energized conductor and the supporting structure while mechanically supporting the conductor.
✅ 4. Cross Arm V-Bracket
Supports the insulators and maintains the required mechanical spacing and arrangement of the overhead conductors.
✅ 5. Fuse Cut-Out / D.O. Fuse Cut-Out
Provides protection against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions and helps isolate the transformer from the 11kV supply when required.
✅ 6. LT Bushing
Provides an insulated path for the transformer's low-voltage output to safely connect to the LT distribution system.
✅ 7. 25kVA 3-Phase Transformer (11kV/0.4kV)
Steps down the 11kV medium-voltage supply to 400V/0.4kV low voltage for distribution to electrical loads.
✅ 8. Transformer Mounting Structure
Mechanically supports and securely holds the transformer on the PCC pole.
✅ 9. LT MCCB Box
Provides low-voltage protection, isolation, and control for the outgoing LT supply.
✅ 10. PCC Pole – 8 Meter
Acts as the main structural support for the transformer, protection equipment, conductors, and associated electrical components.
✅ 11. Earthing System
Provides a safe path for fault and leakage currents to flow into the ground, helping protect people and equipment.
✅ 12. Base Plate
Provides a stable mechanical foundation and helps securely anchor the pole structure.
✅ 13. SLD (Single Line Diagram)
The SLD represents the basic power flow:
11kV Overhead Feeder → D.O. Fuse Cut-Out → Transformer → LT Bus → MCCB → Load
💡 Working Principle:
The incoming 11kV supply passes through the protection and switching equipment before entering the 25kVA transformer. The transformer steps the voltage down to 0.4kV, after which the low-voltage supply passes through the LT bus and MCCB before being delivered to the connected load.

⚠️ Actual equipment ratings, protection settings, clearances, earthing arrangements, and installation practices must follow the applicable utility standards and electrical safety regulations.
