China 🇨🇳 sanctions five US companies in response to Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs placed sanctions on five US defense companies on July 7th. BAE Systems Land and Armaments, Alliant Techsystems Operations, AeroVironment, Viasat and Data Link Solutions were among the companies sanctioned.

The ministry noted that "the US arms sales to China's Taiwan region are a blatant violation of the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiqués, particularly the August 17 joint communiqué of 1982."

The sanctions come as Taiwan prepares for its presidential election for the authority government on January 13th. The DPP holds a waning lead in the polls and Western observers are hyping "Chinese aggression" as a top election issue. Indeed, China has made clear that any further moves toward separatism backed by the US will be met with proportionate responses that defend China's sovereignty.

Chad's new interim prime minister says he is forfeiting his own pay to help others in the country, as "a way of modestly contributing what could have belonged to me".

"I am giving up my salary as prime minister, which I will devote entirely to a social scholarship for the 23 provinces," Succès Masra told.

"I feel I have a mission and a privilege to serve the republic," he added.

Soon after, a transitional legislator, Bedei Toullomi, also said he would give up 50% of his salary and donate the rest to orphanages.

It is not clear how much top government officials in Chad earn, as such information is closely guarded.
