🇰🇷 President Yoon Suk Yeol pledges additional $2.3bn in aid for Ukraine 💸 - to help restore peace and rebuild
Seoul will provide the initial $300mn in 2024 in the form of humanitarian aid and the remaining $2bn as long-term, low-interest loans starting in 2025, Yoon revealed during a session at the G20 summit in Delhi.
Does the timeline suggest a lack of trust in Zelensky’s stewardship?🤔

🇬🇧🇨🇳Britain arrests 2 for spying on behalf of China.
British police have confirmed the arrests of two men including a researcher at the House of Commons with links to Conservative MPs, including security minister Tom Tugendhat and foreign affairs committee chairwoman Alicia Kearns, among others.
British PM Rishi Sunak had taken the opportunity at the G20 to complain to Chinese Premier Li Qiang about "Chinese interference in the UK's parliamentary democracy".
The announced charges come days after a former British soldier, Daniel Abed Khalife, who had been charged with spying for Iran managed to escape prison strapped to the bottom of a food delivery van.
Meanwhile, in Germany, two suspects are accused of passing on sensitive documents to Russia's domestic secret service, the FSB. One of the accused was an employee of the German foreign intelligence agency.

🇧🇷🤝 🇷🇺 Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Saturday that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would not be arrested in Brazil if he attends the Group of 20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro next year.
Interviewed on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Delhi by news show Firstpost, Lula said Putin would be invited to next year's event, adding that he himself planned to attend a BRICS bloc of developing nations meeting due in Russia before the Rio meeting.
"I believe that Putin can go easily to Brazil," Lula said. "What I can say to you is that if I'm president of Brazil, and he comes to Brazil, there's no way he will be arrested."
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Putin in March, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. Russia has denied its forces have engaged in war crimes, or forcibly taken Ukrainian children.
Putin has repeatedly skipped international gatherings, and was not present at the G20 get-together in Delhi, sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Brazil is a signatory to the Rome Statute which led to the founding of the ICC. Lula's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

🇧🇫🇳🇪 Burkina Faso army units arrive in Niger
Units of the Burkina Faso army arrived in Niger within the framework of a partnership between the two countries to train and develop the capabilities of the two countries forces in the field of combating terrorism.
They landed on September 7th at Tahoua airport.
The Military Council in Niger said that the deployment of Burkina Faso army units in Niger is not directed against the ECOWAS group.
For his part, Kasum Coulibaly, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Defense, said that sending military forces to Niger would enhance counter-terrorism operations, adding that Niger’s security is closely linked to Burkina Faso’s.
Mali and Burkina Faso had earlier deployed combat aircrafts in Niger.

🇺🇸🇺🇦🚀 Joe Biden is nearing a decision on sending long-range missiles to Kiev, potentially opening another chapter in US military support for Ukraine more than a year and a half into Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country.
The US has long been wary of Ukraine’s request to supply it with so-called ATACMS, a tactical ballistic missile with a range of up to 300km, over concerns about limited stocks and whether it could be used to strike Russian territory, escalating the conflict.
But in recent months, as the war has dragged on and Ukraine has tried to regain territory in the southern and eastern regions of the country, the US has been considering the step. The UK and France have already sent their own long-range missiles to Ukraine this year.
“We’re not taking anything off the table. We don’t have a decision to announce on new capabilities but our position all along has been we will get Ukraine the capabilities that will enable it to succeed on the battlefield,” Jon Finer, the deputy national security adviser, told reporters as Biden travelled from New Delhi to Vietnam on Sunday.
“A decision could be coming soon,” one senior Biden administration official had said on Saturday.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told the Financial Times that he was confident the US would agree to send ATACMS.
“Yes, we are talking about it . . . In every conversation with [US national security adviser] Jake Sullivan this question arises,” Yermak said in an interview in the presidential palace in Kiev. “They understand [ATACMS] are very much needed. I believe it will be agreed and very, very soon.”
Biden has faced mounting pressure from both sides of the political spectrum in the US Congress to approve the transfer of the long-range missiles to Kiev.
🐻 For Ukrainian beggars everything is a "game changer" despite their substandard skill level...

🇷🇺⚔️ 🇫🇷 Maria Zakharova's statement at the treatment of Russian journalists:
Today, the editor-in-chief of the Federal news information portal Russia News, Ekaterina Nadolskaya, was rudely denied access to the press conference of French President Emmanuel Macron at the G20 summit in New Delhi. Moreover, the French tried to break her phone. The reason for such discrimination - and this was directly stated by an employee of the French press service - is that the journalist represents the Russian media.
I wonder if the Western media, are worried about the freedom of speech and concerned about the rights (for example, Politico Europe), will again not notice another racist attack by Macron’s team against the Russian media? Will they again be surprised by our retaliatory steps to the lawlessness happening in relation to the domestic media on the part of the authorities of the EU countries?
We cannot and will not humbly ignore the fact that the vanguard of Western pseudo-democracies, this time in the case of France, which have once again set an example of racial discrimination and violations of the fundamental principles of democracy. Not only did Paris launch a real “witch hunt” in its own information space, virtually destroying the media presence of Russian broadcasters in its public sphere and creating unbearable conditions for the work of domestic correspondents. Now they do not hesitate to export such disdain for pluralism of opinions and media rights outside the area of the “collective West.” That is, to countries and regions to which France has been preaching about democracy and freedom of speech for decades.
Such a policy, saturated with falsehood, arrogance and a complex of exclusivity, will ultimately work against its proponents. We also consider what happened as a blatant manifestation of racism and aggressive nationalism, since the incident is based on an act of discrimination based on nationality.
❗️ We demand an apology from the Elysee Palace to the media representative.
Currently, representatives of 11 French media outlets are accredited in Russia. All of them have free access to participate in press events of the Russian Foreign Ministry. By the way, no one prevented an AFP correspondent and cameraman from attending today’s press conference of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following the G20 summit.

💉👀 More unintended consequences of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The United Nations’ Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) has released a report placing Afghanistan as the fastest growing methamphetamine producer in the world.
Afghanistan has for decades been major supplier of opium and heroin to world illicit markets but since 2019 production of methamphetamine has increased dramatically, driven by the ease of production, the ready supply of the native ephedra plant throughout the country, and well-established smuggling networks.
The UNODC alleges Afghan meth has been found in East Africa and the European Union and poses an immediate threat to national and regional health and security.
Since taking back power the Taliban has prohibited the cultivation, production, sale, and use of all intoxicants and narcotics in Afghanistan. An Afghan health ministry source, speaking to America's ABC on the condition of anonymity, claimed some 20,000 addicts were in treatment in Afghan hospitals dealing mostly with addiction to methamphetamine.
US military interventions have a history of leaving behind addiction crises and large scale drug production, Vietnam saw some 10-15% of active US servicemen addicted to heroin and US allies heavily involved in the global heroin trade long after the retreat from Saigon (for an excellent account read the 1972 work The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia by Alfred W. McCoy and Cathleen B. Read).
