πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ πŸŒ‰ Issues with Infrastructure in the USA

Today's incident, resulting in the collapse of a highway bridge in Baltimore, has once again sparked public discussion about the state of American infrastructure.

Primarily, there are challenges with water, alongside issues in the functioning of electrical networks and railway communications.

β–ͺ️ In 2019β€”during Donald Trump's presidencyβ€” the American Society of Civil Engineers stated that around $4.5 trillion would need to be spent by 2025 for the enhancement of bridges, dams, highways, airports, and more. Specifically, about $123 billion was earmarked for bridge repairs alone.

β–ͺ️ In 2022, the Joe Biden administration acknowledged the issue and allocated funds for the restoration of water infrastructure, including bridges, dams, and ports. The allocated amount was notable - $2.7 billion - yet clearly insufficient for comprehensive modernization. Moreover, the funds were directed to the US Army Corps, which, as anticipated, led to speculation that the money was misused, potentially diverted as β€œaid to Ukraine.”

β–ͺ️ Nonetheless, according to reports from various experts, in the initial two years of Biden’s presidency, it was feasible to gather the full sum of federal funds, but these were expended on numerous environmental projects and superficial renovations.

β–ͺ️ The consequence of this approach was unforeseen: in 2023, following a car accident involving a fuel tanker, a bridge on Interstate 95 collapsed. Subsequently, after an incident with a container ship, a bridge in Baltimore also collapsed. Concurrently, as per separate data, 47 thousand American bridges are in a state of disrepair.

πŸ”»The incident in Baltimore has also drawn attention to potential victims: over a dozen cars plunged into the water, prompting the state governor to declare a state of emergency. This event evokes memories of last year's incident involving the derailment of a train carrying chemicals in Ohio - where the condition of the railway infrastructure was identified as a primary factor.

We anticipate that Maryland or Ohio will need to be addressed on multiple occasions. The average age of American infrastructure exceeds 70 years (some facilities have surpassed a century), and the anticipated service life of power grids is approximately 50 years, contributing to frequent summer blackouts in the states.

Evidently, this issue will need to be addressed by the succeeding American administration. Not just acknowledged, but actively resolved. Unless, of course, another Ukraine situation arises.

πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈπŸ‡ΉπŸ‡·πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊIn the story of the terrorist attack in the Moscow Crocus, there is at least one country with which the suspected terrorists have quite obvious connections.

This is TΓΌrkiye.

Before the terrorist attack, two suspects lived in hotels in the central districts of Istanbul, as well as in an apartment on the outskirts, writes the Turkish portal Yetkinreport.

We are talking about Faridun Shamsiddin, who published photos from Istanbul in February, and Murodali Rachabalizoda.

Rachabalizoda arrived in Istanbul on January 5 and checked into the Fatih Hotel, but left on February 21.

Shamsiddin arrived in Istanbul from Moscow on February 20, and checked into the same hotel the next day.

And on March 2, they both flew to Moscow.

Taking into account the rather long time spent in Istanbul and the date of departure to Moscow, we can assume a far from zero probability of the version that the suspects’ trip to Turkey could be connected with the preparation of a terrorist attack.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡·πŸ‡§πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦French President Emmanuel Macron is flying to Brazil today to try to convince its leader Lula da Silva to support Ukraine.

This was reported to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity by French officials.

According to officials, the French leader is betting that his differences with Lula on the Russian invasion of Ukraine can be reduced, although Brazil believes that both sides share the blame for the war.

Lula has repeatedly rejected the idea of providing weapons to Ukraine, arguing that the US and EU strategy undermines the prospect of ending the war through negotiations.

Bloomberg writes that Brazil's position largely resonates in the Global South, which includes non-Western countries with emerging economies.

According to French officials, Macron views Brazil as a key player among this group of countries, especially given that it holds the rotating presidency of the G20, which includes most of the world's largest economies.

The article says that Macron's visit is also an attempt to reassure French farmers who are protesting against cheap imports, in particular from South America.
