RT @ICRI_Coral_Reef: #DYK? 1997 was declared by ICRI as the first International Year of the Reef (IYOR), in response to the increasing threats on #coralreefs and associated ecosystems around the world. #ICRI30

πŸͺΈIYOR is a global effort to increase awareness and understanding on the values and threats to coral reefs, and to support related conservation, research and management efforts.

🐠The first IYOR, followed by the 1998 International Year of the Ocean, broadened #awareness and commitment around the #world and created a new sense of urgency for conservation and sustainable use of coral reef ecosystems. The Pacific Year of the Reef and the launch of the ReefCheck voluntary monitoring network are just two of the many innovative activities of IYOR. Each continues to generate action and the information and awareness needed to support that #action.

πŸŒŠThe 1997 Pacific Year of the Reef was a region wide education and awareness campaign, in collaboration with @SprepChannel

🌎Over 225 organisations in 50 countries and territories participated in the first #IYOR, and over 700 articles in papers and magazines were generated, and hundreds of scientific surveys were undertaken. #ForCoral

RT @ICRI_Coral_Reef: #DYK? In 2000 The International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN), was established in response to ICRI’s Call to Action.

With a historic grant from the United Nations Foundation (UNF), ICRAN supported the implementation of ICRI’s Framework for Action.

πŸͺΈICRAN was an #innovative and dynamic network of many of the world’s leading #coralreef science and conservation organisations. The network consolidated technical and scientific expertise in reef monitoring and management to create strategically linked #actions across local, national and global scales.

🌊 πŸŒICRAN was thus the first alliance to respond to #conservation needs at the #global scale by recognising both traditional and scientific perspectives of coral reef dynamics and respective social dependency. It sought to put #mechanisms in place that support the translation of findings into direct on-ground action throughout the world’s major coral reef regions #ForCoral

ICRI continues to raise the plight for coral reefs working at the science to policy level #ICRI30
