Why this is important is how many maintainers left Intel leaving many orphaned packages for Intel devices. It is a question if they will be as good. Given that the government has been involved with the company should give us pause.

Even if they do pass this law. Linux is not beholden to any regional geographic location. The one distro and company that Colorado could affect is System76 and PopOS. It is also safe to assume that the legislatures are technology illiterate window lickers. There is also the complication of jurisdiction. PopOS is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian. PopOS would not have any control over things outside of its own development.
Microsoft needs no persuasion as they already vacuum your colon clean on any personal information.
This is not a red or blue problem anymore or just the US, it's all of ours and the fight is now.

I will add a caveat on metadata. A GrapheneOS photo should not have any metadara at all when taken from the camera. That is the point of a privacy phone OS. EXIF is another tool to help fight fake images in addition to a trained eye. There is too much crap being flooded into the system. We can no longer take things as true when looking at photos.

Google spent over a decade telling developers that Google API keys (like those used in Maps, Firebase, etc.) are not secrets. But that's no longer true.

It's time to weigh in on this shill push of immutable. Not Sorry, no this is not the future. Option is nice for those that want it, but the Linux ecosystem should remain the way it is on being flexible on it's choices. Images are not easy to work with as everything is containerized this means having to run containers like bloated flatpaks. You can't install your software the standard way.
If a captive portal is ever placed in the image. Immutable would not be able to remove that type of offending software. You'll be stuck if you wanted to access the system. Immutable has it's place in embedded systems like gaming consoles and IoT. The standard way things are right now is fine.
A prime example of immutable that is in your hand is your phone. They may allow you the apps but if you have anything but a Pixel like a Samsung. Your stuck. What is the upgrade of Android version but an image taking the place of another.

For a while there has been a declining quality in Technology News. AI written headlines and stories written by people who may understand technology in passing but are over their heads. Come to find out the sites were bought up by a sleazy Canadian investment capital firm in 2023. Not listed is another website that was shocking.

https://www.valnetinc.com/en/our-brands - This is the AI churn factory responsible. Their corporate culture one of quantity over quality. If the writer complains they are pushed out. All the good talent is already gone. Moving forward these sites will be avoided.

We all know age verification is a tool for surveillance. The worst part is who benefits most. It's being rolled out all over the world.
Critically thinking on it, Big Tech and Big Data win the most.
Corporate backed Linux distros have already been signaling they might comply but no full announcements have been made yet. People like System76 and Canonical do not have a legal chest big enough to endure fines. Catch 22.
Such moves can create a schism within Linux as some defy and the others fold. This is before you get to all the moving parts required.
There are no losses in this for Microsoft whatsoever or truth be told any of big tech.
One move is possible to restore everything in Linux to right though the reputation damage will already be done. The interstate commerce clauses. Given this is coming from both sides of the aisle who will defend Linux?
