LineageOS adopts SeedVault as its open source backup solution
For those not familiar with SeedVault, it is an open-source backup app that uses the same internal APIs as adb backup. The application doesnβt need root access, but it must be compiled with the operating system. The backup location is user-configurable, with options ranging from a USB flash drive to a remote self-hosted cloud alternative such as NextCloud. This makes SeedVault a particularly viable option for users who doesnβt want to store their personal data to Googleβs proprietary cloud-based storage.

Threema publishes source code and lowers prices
The messenger service has disclosed its complete source code and cut its app prices by half.
After the service had already revealed its cryptographic processes to the public for some time, the next step now follows. The entire source code of the apps can now be viewed. It is subject to the third version of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3). Using reproducible builds, specialists can check at any time whether it matches the source code of the sales apps. Due to Apple's app store policies, this is currently only possible via the Android versions.

Astian Translate: Open Source Translations in Nine Languages
Astian's new translation service competes against proprietary services from Google, Microsoft and Amazon. It is based on the Python software Argos Translate.
With Translate, Astian releases a new translation service that appears as free software. At launch, the program can handle nine languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. Automatic input recognition is still experimental.
Users can try out the service on libretranslate.com, which is operated by Astian, but the software can also be deployed on a separate server. The corresponding API can be found on GitHub, including instructions for setup and configuration. However, the Astian server is intended for testing purposes only.

Most proprietary toasters are malware
Help me understand this (really).
Why should software be expected to have source code available? Don't get me wrong - I love SQLite and OpenSSL, but it has nothing to do with having access to the source code.
My toaster did not come with specs and design documents so I can change it. Neither did my power drill or car.
The music I listen do doesn't have synthesizer settings available and raw source before mixing. Movies I watch don't come with scripts, budgets, contacts, location licenses, etc.
What is it specifically about software that makes people think the source must be available? Where does this expectation come from?

LibreOffice team say they are working on a WebAssembly port
Developers hope to deliver a working example in the next few months.
Developers are reportedly getting close to bringing LibreOffice, the popular open source alternative to Microsoft Office, to the web browser using WebAssembly (WASM).
The project already offers LibreOffice Online as a collaborative, web-based version of LibreOffice. However, you can only really use it through its Collabora Online commercial variant.
Even as the Documentation Foundation (TDF), which helps develop and maintain LibreOffice, claims that it βis not planning to develop and fund a cloud solution similar to existing products from Google and Microsoft,β the developers of the WASM port hope to deliver a working demo by summer 2021.

TrackerControl
TrackerControl allows users to monitor and control the widespread, ongoing, hidden data collection in mobile apps about user behaviour (βtrackingβ).
To detect tracking, TrackerControl combines the power of the Disconnect blocklist, used by Firefox, and our in-house blocklist is used, created from analysing ~2 000 000 apps! Additionally, TrackerControl supports custom blocklists.
π‘ This approach
ππΌ reveals the companies behind tracking,
ππΌ allows to block tracking selectively, and
ππΌ exposes the purposes of tracking, such as analytics or advertising.
The app also aims to educate about your rights under Data Protection Law, such the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Under the hood, TrackerControl uses Androidβs VPN functionality, to analyse appsβ network communications locally on the Android device. This is accomplished through a local VPN server, to enable network traffic analysis by TrackerControl.
π‘ No root is required, other VPNs or Private DNS are not supported. No external VPN server is used, to keep your data safe! TrackerControl even protects you against DNS cloaking, a popular technique to hide trackers in websites and apps.
TrackerControl will always be free and open source, being a research project.

SuperTokens
SuperTokens is an open core alternative to proprietary login providers like Auth0 or AWS Cognito. We are different because we offer:
ππΌ Open source: SuperTokens can be used for free, forever, with no limits on the number of users.
ππΌ An on-premises deployment so that you control 100% of your user data, using your own database.
ππΌ An end to end solution with login, sign ups, user and session management, without all the complexities of OAuth protocols.
ππΌ Ease of implementation and higher security.
ππΌ Extensibility: Anyone can contribute and make SuperTokens better!
π‘ Philosophy
Authentication directly affects UX, dev experience and security of any app. We believe that current solutions are unable to optimise for all three "pillars", leading to a large number of applications hand rolling their own auth. This not only leads to security issues, but is also a massive time drain.
We want to change that - we believe the only way is to provide a solution that has the right level of abstraction, gives you maximum control, is secure, and is simple to use - just like if you build it yourself, from scratch (minus the time to learn, build and maintain).
We also believe in the principle of least vendor lockin. Your having full control of your user's data means that you can switch away from SuperTokens without forcing your existing users to logout, reset their passwords or in the worst case, sign up again.

Castopod Host
Castopod Host is an open-source server made for podcasters who want engage and interact with their audience. Please note that Castopod Host is still under heavy development: it may not be 100% stable and some features are still being developed.
We are a team of entrepreneurs and developers who spent the last ten years developing media content solutions.
We have always been advocates for the open source community, but we coud not find open source solutions for podcasts that suited our needs, so we decided to start The Podlibre Iniative.
The past two decades of organic growth were driven by original audio content producers.
Major digital players and audio content industry are now investing on Podcasts.
Yet, compared to the standards in Social Media and Search Engines, Podcasts - technology, user experience - have not evolved much for the past 20 years.
It is time for all players - Podcasters, Radio Networks, Journalists, Writers and all Voice lovers - to power up podcasts!
