People were playing volleyball under the big Buddha statue in Bamiyan, when the Taliban had not yet destroyed the statue.
The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two colossal statues of Buddha carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamiyan Valley of central Afghanistan. The statues were respectively 55 and 38 meters (180 and 125 ft) tall, making them the largest Buddha sculptures in the world at the time of their destruction in 2001. They were considered masterpieces of Buddhist art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The larger statue, which was located to the west, was depicted with a male face. The smaller statue, which was located to the east, was depicted with a female face. The Buddhas were destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan at the time. The Taliban considered the Buddhas to be idolatrous and against Islamic law.
