For a long time, the 2013 death of 33-year-old award-winning journalist and war correspondent Michael Hastings has both intrigued and haunted me. To this day I wish justice for him.

In reflection, I think this is because I identify with his fearless pursuit of truth, we were the same age, generally felt he was a good American, and have always thought to myself after his death, "that could be me–that could be any one of us."

On June 7, 2013, Hasting's last post for BuzzFeed, where he was a staff writer, focused on “Why Democrats Love to Spy on Americans.” At the time of his death, Hastings was working on a profile of CIA Director John Brennan for Rolling Stone.

From losing his fiancée to a car bomb while covering the Iraq war; his body of work (not all I agree with); the timing of his death/story he was working on; testimony of his friends and colleagues about what he was experiencing just before he died; him believing he was being spied on and that his car was hacked; to the crash forensics that just didn't add up, Hastings death–like Seth Rich's–is one I feel everyone should know about.

In 2017 the CIA's Vault 7 leak broke, confirming in my mind as I read through its evidence that Hasting's car was indeed hacked (and probably rigged with explosives) to cause his death. I was not alone.
