Repentance, or metanoia, having a change of heart, coming to a new understanding that is (by grace, led of the Spirit); discernment.
We gain discernment regarding the will of God and the state of ourselves and man in relation to Him, when we repent. When we believe the scriptures that say God would offer a sacrifice of His own making to free us from death and Hell. That that sacrifice is the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
That discernment, if the new man created at salvation is fed, leads to a change in attitude towards sin. It becomes less desirable. The lusts of the flesh can lose their appeal. Even disgusting us.
If that new man isn't fed, and they continue walking in the flesh, they are still saved by the knowledge of the truth, but that discernment is dulled and God may have to chasten the person to work godly sorrow in their heart. If they remain backslidden, God may call them home.
But they are still saved.
Saying "real repentance WILL mean you turn from sin, and WILL walk in the Spirit," is false. We must pick up our cross daily. It is a choice to engage in sanctification. But salvation is of Christ, not ourselves. It is by grace, not of ourselves.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Good works are great for others, to help our testimony, to serve God, to receive eternal rewards. They donβt contribute towards salvation.

The parable of the vine in John 15. Does it talk about losing salvation? No, of course not.

7 common subtle 'works based salvations':
1. (02:04) works don't save, works prove you're saved.
2. (06:00) repent of your sins to be saved
3. (09:14) commit/give/surrender your life to Jesus - obey/follow/love Jesus - relationship with Jesus
4. (14:07) changed life
5. (18:01) you can't 'just' believe in Jesus
6. (19:04) you can't just live any way you want to
7. (19:33) the demons believe, faith without works is dead

Notice that Fundamental Baptists, from our doctrines to our dress, to our family lives and churches, are normal. Separation. Nothing weird or too crazy and superstitious. Nothing that's not explicitly explained in the Bible. And with fruit to show of leading thousands of people to Christ every year.
Meanwhile these death cults demand you swallow ridiculous blasphemy after ridiculous blasphemy. To maintain a belief system that defies logic, contradicts clear scripture and does the opposite of what God gave us in His word, and produces no fruit. Just thorns and thistles.

The second saddest thing about people who have gone all in on the apostate pagan cult of Rome, behind their eternal damnation, is that they live a life never knowing peace with God. Always looking fearfully over their shoulder. Never understanding love without dissimulation, unfeigned.
They can't. Because that love comes from the Father to His children. And without salvation, you aren't His.
And so, because they reject God's grace for dead works, they see love as transactional. That it is "what have you done for me lately." It's sad and gross. Unconditional love, agape love, they can't really know. And the peace that comes with that? They call it a "sin of "presumption." They call faith a sin.
If you are caught up in Catholicism please, repent from dead works and towards God
