NASSER BLASTING BRITAIN
After coming out on top in the Suez Crisis, Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, was empowered. He responded to insults made by UK state broadcaster, the BBC, with a tirade of his own, taking aim at the British Queen. To him, the events of 1956 symbolised a new era in world politics. He’d nationalised the strategic waterway and withstood attacks from Israel and colonial powers. That made him a hero at home, and was cheered during this famous speech.
