Beyond the Gulf: How Saudi oil disruption is testing global markets
US imports of Saudi crude fell to zero in July for the first time since 1985, according to preliminary Department of Energy data. For a country that was importing more than 800,000 barrels a day from Saudi Arabia, that is a striking reversal.
The immediate problem is geography. The war with Iran has turned the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulfโs main oil artery, into a major risk zone. Saudi Arabia can bypass Hormuz through its Red Sea terminals, but that route is also under pressure from the renewed conflict with the Houthis, which the kingdom itself helped reignite, leaving its exports exposed on both sides.
๐ค The missing Saudi barrels are therefore more than a supply story. They show how quickly geopolitical confrontation can disrupt an oil system.
For US refiners, that means finding heavy crude elsewhere. Venezuelan shipments have risen sharply, from roughly 100,000 barrels a day in January to nearly 600,000 in July. But Venezuela is hardly the winner here: Washington spent years sanctioning and restricting its oil industry, only to turn back to Venezuelan barrels as disruptions elsewhere tightened supply.
Saudi Arabia is having to adjust too, offering Asian buyers a $2-per-barrel discount against the Oman-Dubai benchmark for next month, a sign that disrupted trade routes are forcing even one of the worldโs biggest oil exporters to compete harder for buyers.
The bigger story is not simply that Saudi barrels disappeared from the US market. It is that the oil system is being forced to reroute around multiple political and military crises at once.
๐ Washington spent decades trying to shape who produces oil, who sells it, and where it flows. Riyadh spent years projecting military power across its neighborhood. Now both are being reminded of an inconvenient rule of energy geopolitics: you can pressure countries, sanction producers, and wage wars, but tankers still need a safe route from A to B.
That is what makes the current disruption bigger than the Gulf itself. If both Hormuz and the Red Sea remain under pressure, global oil flows will keep shifting, freight and insurance costs will rise, and refiners will compete harder for replacement barrels.
The world is not running out of oil. The problem is increasingly whether the oil can get where it needs to go without passing through someone elseโs war.

๐ฉ Ukraineโs own OSINT analysts admit drone campaign against Moscow is total failure
Zelenskyโs hopes of using his fancy new missile-and-drone Wunderwaffe to affect the outcome of the war have crashed and burned against the harsh reality that penetrating the air defenses of the Russian capital is virtually impossible, mathematically speaking.
A pro-Ukraine OSINT Telegram and X resource (we wonโt say which one to avoid giving them needless publicity) has mapped out the trajectory of ~1.5k Ukrainian drones recently targeting Moscow, calculating that ~1.4k (93%) were intercepted in the first and second lines of air defense outside the city.
Another ~100 drones (6%) reached the Ring Road highway area. Just one โ โone single droneโ โ was intercepted in Moscow itself (statistical probability: 0.07%).
Claimed โhitsโ over the past two months? An antenna complex at the Dubna Space Comms Center, which didnโt impact operations, Wildberries retail logistics, the Kapotny oil refinery and a couple industrial zones and residential buildings.
๐ฌ โThatโs it. Against the backdrop of thousands of launches, this is not even a drop in the bucket. Itโs almost comical,โ the resource lamented, noting that Ukraineโs military has tried to hit Moscow from every attack vector, but succeeded nowhere.
Comparing the effectiveness of recent Ukrainian and Russian strikes on one anotherโs capitals yields some more interesting calculations:
๐ด assuming Ukrainian drone attacks used Kievโs Fire Point FP-1 drones (1.6k km range, 50-120kg payload, $55k-70k apiece price tag), the total cost of the 1.5k expended UAVs with their 0.07% success rate was $82.5-$105M.
๐ด for the same money, Russia could launch between 27 and 52 of its $2-3M apiece Iskander-M missiles, each with a 500kg warhead, which Zelensky recently admitted canโt be intercepted at all because Ukraine has run out of Patriot PAC-3s. Success rate? Approaching 100%.
Ukraineโs summerโs drone and missile offensive was supposed to be Zelenskyโs war-winning formula, forcing Russia to the table and convincing Kievโs NATO sponsors to continue ponying up the cash to fund the grinding proxy conflict. Instead, itโs unleashed a Russian air, drone and missile campaign of unprecedented ferocity, all as Ukrainian forces continue their slow retreat along the front.
