In the eighth and final lecture of this series we first, as a continuation of the last lecture and an introduction to this lecture looked to a letter which Imam Sajjad (A.S.) the 4th Shi'i Imam wrote to the Ibn Shahab al-Zuhri an influential pro Umayyad scholar.

Then we focused on the Umayyad Ideology, that is how they used religious arguments to protect their political power, a legacy which is still present among muslim communities.

We discussed the Umayyad theory of Prophethood and Caliphate in the fifth lecture, here we had a more thorough and comprehensive discussion on the Umayyad ideology by focusing on the extant letters of Abd al-Hamid bin Yahya al- Katib (d. 132AH/ 750AD), the renown Arabic prose writer, as it is discussed in Wadad al-Qadi (b. 1943AD) works.

Abd Al-Hamid was in the service, close associate and effectively ideologue of the two Umayyad caliphs Hisham ibn ' Abd-al-Malik (reg. 105-125AH/ 723-742AD) and Marwan ibn Muhammad (Marwan II reg. 127-132AH/ 744-750AD).

The ultimate message of these letters is that the Umayyads, on whose behalf they were written, are the supreme sovereigns of the Islamic realm to whom complete obedience is rightfully due.

This is a purely political message, a claim to absolute political power.
As presented in the letters, however, this claim is given religious dimensions; indeed, it is almost entirely clad in a religious garb.

For achieving this goal an ideological structure was erected in which a carefully crafted and argued conception of the caliphate, was the central component.

This structure, first, gives the caliphate a "natural" place in the Qur'anic vision of human history from the time of creation to contemporary times. After that it makes a comparison between the caliphate and prophethood.It then establishes a particular relationship between God and the caliphs. As a consequence, it makes the caliphs in charge of the rightful religion; Islam. It then concentrates on the main component of this religion and decides that it is obedience. From that it draws the conclusion that obedience to the caliphs (irrespective of justice and fairness) is a religious requirement.

در اين سلسله درسگفتارها تاريخ الهيات و انديشه اسلامی را در قرون ميانه از چشم انداز چالش عقل و نقل و دو جريان عقل گرا و سنت گرا مورد بحث قرار داده ايم. از دوران محنه و عصر احمد بن حنبل سخن گفتيم و از نزاع ميان معتزله و اهل حديث از يک سو و معتزله با اشاعره از ديگر سو. همچنين از اختلاف سنيان اشعری با اصحاب حديث اهل سنت بحث کرديم و از اختلافاتی که در ميان خود اهل حديث و حنبليان در چالش عقل و نقل در طی قرن ها در جريان بوده. مدافعان علم کلام و مخالفان آن و دفاعيه های هر کدام را مورد مطالعه قرار داديم. در اين سلسله درسگفتارها چالش عقل و نقل در موضوعات الهيات تنزيهی و سلبی، تشبيه گرایی و تصوير خدا در نزد مکاتب مختلف کلامی و مذهبی و همچنين درباره موضوع خلق قرآن را بحث کرديم. نظر مذاهب مختلف کلامی را درباره به کارگيری شيوه های عقلی و فلسفی و استدلالی به بحث گذاشتيم و سرشت و سرنوشت انديشه اسلامی را در نزاع عقل و سنت با بازخوانی مهمترين متن ها در اين زمينه مورد مطالعه قرار داديم. شنيدن اين درسگفتارها برای دانشجويان فلسفه اسلامی و کلام و الهيات و تاريخ می تواند مفيد باشد.
