Why are smokers much less likely to contract Covid?

They arent really, but they are much less likely to feel it.

What is taking place is simple science

Allow me to explain.

Nicotine inhibits the cytokine response for TNF (tumor necrosis factor), IL-1, and IL-6 (Interleukins, primary proinflammatory mediators activated by your body's natural immune defense) by stimulating the Vagus Nerve, which mediates these specific inflammatory pathways that are targeted when Covid19 binds to the ACE2 protein.

Meaning that the body doesn't react in the same way. Its systemic response is dulled.

Macrophage TNF is inhibited, and this attenuates systemic inflammatory responses (this means with less macrophages present, the immune response isn't triggered as heavily. Macrophages serve as a sort of trigger and regulator for the inflammation process via chemical signals created by monocytes [immune cells])

Meaning the body, even when it has covid19, isn't having the same inflammation response at all.
It is actually the nAChR pathway here (Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors) that are targeted and creating and preventing specific chemical reactions, and not specifically the docking mechanism for the ACE2 protein.


Neat, right?

So does this mean smoking prevents Covid?

Not really, but it does mean that covid is much less likely to create a systemic inflammation response if you use nicotine.

Studies are being done right now in multiple countries looking into this specific relationship, and the phenomenon has been studied in a handful of other viral illnesses for some time.
