Since childhood Salvador was panic-stricken by grasshoppers - in his paintings they symbolize fear:
"Grasshopper! You forget about him, and he's right there. And I shake with terror. I'm always shaking. The heavy lumbering gallop of that green mare throws me into a dreary stupor. All my life it has haunted me like an obsession, tormenting me, driving me crazy. I am 37 years old, and the fear this thing inspires in me has not diminished."
