⏰ COMING SOON: On September 11, at 10:00 Vladivostok time (GMT+10), or at 3:00 Moscow time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will hold a session, titled “Open Far East in the World Economy: Achievements and Plans for the Future”, within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

The Valdai Club session at the EEF-2023 continues the Club’s flagship project dedicated to Russia’s turn to the East. During the discussion, the speakers will analyse the dynamics of Russian-Asian cooperation after February 24, 2022, share forecasts, and evaluate joint projects that are in demand amid the current situation.

📑 The Valdai Club prepared a report for the EEF, titled “Russia and Asia: Paradoxes of a New Reality”. It consists of a series of case studies conducted under the auspices of the Club this past spring. The authors of the report for the first time showed how the peculiarities of regional development and the conflict in Ukraine have affected Russia’s bilateral relations with each of the Asia-Pacific countries.

🗣 On September 13, 2023, a meeting was held in Beijing between the delegation of the Valdai International Discussion Club and representatives of the Xinhua News Agency.

During the meeting, Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, and President of the Xinhua News Agency Fu Hua discussed the prospects for cooperation.

In particular, the parties agreed on the participation of the director of the Research Institute of the Xinhua News Agency, Liu Gang, in the upcoming Valdai Club event. Andrey Bystritskiy, in turn, was invited to a thematic event for the exchange of ideas between think tanks within the framework of the 3rd Belt and Road Forum on International Cooperation.

The theme of this year’s Valdai Club discussion is based on the premise that modern conflicts are a legacy of a past era and not a means to shape a future one. Instead, the future success of global and national development depends on our ability to avoid conflict.

🗣 Is Progress Possible Without Conflict? Valdai Club Session at SPIEF 2024

As part of the business program at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), a session of the Valdai Club took place on June 6. The event’s participants explored the question of whether global and national development can occur without conflict and violence.

Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, noted in his introductory remarks that conflicts that stem from the past continue to dominate our world, yet the majority of people in the world do not wish to be involved in them and are seeking ways to avoid being drawn into them.

Fyodor Lukyanov, Valdai Club Research Director, who served as moderator for the session, pointed out that the notion of conflict as a catalyst for growth is embedded in the Western perception of progress, which is no longer the dominant perspective. He emphasized that countries with different philosophies are playing an increasing role on the global stage and invited participants to consider a world governed by different principles.
