🎥 Global warming and economy recovery after Covid make impact on Arctic transport corridor development.

Glenn Diesen, professor at the University of Southeast Norway, who participated at Valdai Club’s session at EEF-2021 said that Russia requires investment in order to engage in large-scale international trade. What other external factors need to be taken into account in development of the Far East and the Arctic regions he shared his views in interview with valdaiclub.com

🇷🇺🇨🇳 The Russian Far East (RFE) invariably attracts Beijing’s attention.

Chinese researchers do not exclude that the PRC will be able to redirect some transcontinental transit flows through the region, including the Northern Sea Route, as well as form a sustainable resource base which would serve China’s interests in terms of security and development.  For the Celestial Empire, this is especially important in light of the aggravation of relations with Washington and the deterioration of the situation in the East and South China Seas, which is now fraught with the risk of a disruption of sea transport capabilities. Russia’s interest is associated with the establishment of the “Greater Eurasian Partnership” as a non-Western vector of integration.

At the same time, it is still too early to talk about any significant role of the RFE, for example, in the Belt and Road project, writes Andrey Gubin, Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations of the Eastern Institute of the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok).

🌏 The 21st century is the century of the Far East.

🎯 In 2021, half of the world’s population was in the Far East.

🎯 Half of the top 20 countries by population are from the Far East: China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam.

🎯 The Far East Economic Circle accounts for 40% of the global GDP and contributes more than 50% of the global economic growth.

🎯 Between 2015 and 2030, the consumption of the world’s middle class is expected to increase by 30 trillion U.S. dollar, with Europe accounting for only 1 trillion U.S. dollar, and more than a half is from the Far East.

The most urgent task now is to correct the past stereotype of “Far East = remoteness + marginalization”.

We need to regard it as the hope for future development, and strive to promote the integration of the Russian Far East into the Greater Far East, that is, the process of East Asian economic integration, writes Wang Wen, Executive Dean of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY), Renmin University of China.

📌 The article was prepared in advance of the Valdai Sessions as part of the Eastern Economic Forum 2022.

🌏 About 30 export-oriented investment projects with a total value of more than 80 billion rubles are being implemented in Russia's Far Eastern Federal District.

The largest volume of export is from Kamchatka and Primorsky Krai, first of all, these are water and biological resources.

Especially for Valdai Club session at the Eastern Economic Forum, we created an infographic on the accelerated development of the Far Eastern Federal District.

📌 The session titled “Gateway to the Multipolar World. The Far East in the New Architecture of International Relations” within the framework of the business programme of the EEF will take place tomorrow, on September 6, at 10:00 local time (GMT+10).

🌏 The current global crisis, on the one hand, makes us worry about the future, and on the other hand, it opens not even windows, but whole stained-glass windows of opportunities. This is especially true of both the Russian Far East and Asia as a whole.

1️⃣ First, the amazing political configuration of the entire Asia-Pacific region. Aside from a few long-smouldering conflicts, the region as a whole is surprisingly peaceful, and mostly cooperative. The political space of the Asia-Pacific region is quite comfortable for the accelerated development of social and economic ties between the countries of this, and not only this region. The Russian Far East is a natural hub, a gateway through which Russia can effectively interact with the outside world.

2️⃣ Second, the future of the Asia-Pacific region is open. It is only taking shape before our eyes and, I hope, with Russia’s participation. In recent years, Russia has turned very effectively towards Asia. But Asia is also turning towards Russia. Moreover, the countries of the region are mainly pursuing foreign policy independently and are not about to join the West in its desire to weaken and isolate Russia – at the very least. On the contrary, Asia obviously needs a strong and independent Russia capable of ensuring a balance of power in the region.

3️⃣ Finally, there is probably the most important circumstance — the presence in some countries of the Asia-Pacific region of a developed, creative middle class. Russia is certainly among these countries. The presence of such a middle class, that is, a layer of people who make money on innovation, on the advanced technologies, creates an additional dimension of the development of the region as a whole. This dimension turns the design of the future into a rational task, the solution of which depends on the talents of people and on their ability to reach agreements and get along with each other.

Thus, the Asia-Pacific region has received a unique chance for accelerated and thoughtful development. the future is open, it can and should be built consciously, step by step.

How this will happen will be discussed at the traditional Valdai Club session as part of the Eastern Economic Forum on September 11, titled Open Far East in the World Economy: Achievements and Plans for the Future, writes Valdai Club Chairman Andrey Bystritskiy

🌏 Asia is now precisely the region that has become Russia’s “gateway” to the global economy; it trades most actively with us and maintains a dialogue at the interstate level.

This is also evidenced by the results of the analysis carried out by Valdai Club experts in a recently published report on the dynamics of relations between Russia and Asian countries over the past year and a half.

Since the spring of 2022, the West began to pursue a policy of ousting us from world markets, and ties with Asia played a decisive role in the fact that this ultimately did not happen. The Far East and its leading cities, including Vladivostok itself, has become the most important “hub” for trade and economic relations with Asian countries on a new scale. Over the past months, the load on cargo ports has increased manifold.

That is why the Eastern Economic Forum, traditionally, has not only been about business cooperation, but also about solving the development problems which face the Far East as a whole. This is achieved through the close coordination of measures taken by the Russian government and the initiatives of the business community.

The EEF-2023 was a kind of synchronisation of watches on how the “pivot to Asia” policy responded to the demand and needs that arose last year, what has already been done, and what problems have become the most important. These problems of today form the agenda for tomorrow, writes Valdai Club Programme Director Timofei Bordachev.
