πŸ—£ Is Progress Possible Without Conflict? Valdai Club Session at SPIEF 2024

As part of the business program at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), a session of the Valdai Club took place on June 6. The event’s participants explored the question of whether global and national development can occur without conflict and violence.

Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club, noted in his introductory remarks that conflicts that stem from the past continue to dominate our world, yet the majority of people in the world do not wish to be involved in them and are seeking ways to avoid being drawn into them.

Fyodor Lukyanov, Valdai Club Research Director, who served as moderator for the session, pointed out that the notion of conflict as a catalyst for growth is embedded in the Western perception of progress, which is no longer the dominant perspective. He emphasized that countries with different philosophies are playing an increasing role on the global stage and invited participants to consider a world governed by different principles.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡³ The Charter system today faces unprecedented challenges.

The tension between the multilateralism and normative aspirations for peace and development represented by the Charter system and the competitive practices of international politics has become a contradiction and possibly an antinomy – an irreconcilable difference.

Cold War II is more challenging and dangerous than the first, above all because of the threat to very existence of the Charter systems and its norms, Richard Sakwa writes.

πŸ“† ANNOUNCEMENT: On June 17, at 16:00 Moscow Time (GMT+3), the Valdai Club will host a discussion on the results of the 50th G7 summit and its significance in global politics.

This year’s G7 summit is taking place on June 13-15. The agenda outlined by the Italian presidency focuses on the Global South and topics related to the Ukraine crisis, Western unity, the challenges posed by BRICS, adherence to international law, economic and energy security, migration, and cooperation with Africa. All of this is discussed in the context of the increasing transformation of the world order towards multipolarity.

Seven countries which once boasted of being the leading economies in the world are now observing the rapid development and strengthening positions of the BRICS member states in the global economic landscape. In an effort to maintain their initiative, the G7 countries are proposing various restrictive measures against Russia and China, as well as other emerging economies.

The organization, which was previously involved in global development and the establishment of conditions for economic growth, is now discussing new restrictions on international trade, sanctions, and pressure on other countries.

❓How will the upcoming 50th G7 Summit impact international relations?
❓What have the Group of Seven managed to agree upon in terms of resolving the Ukraine crisis?

πŸŒπŸ›’οΈ The establishment of OPEC+ in 2016 was a part of the global system entered a transitional phase. OPEC+ reflects the change that has occurred in the matrix of major powers and the transformation of China and Russia into two vertices of the triangle of the global system along with the United States; the global system has become multi-sided.

On the other hand, the establishment of OPEC+ reflects the increase in energy supplies in the global market, after the discovery of shale gas in the United States, and the resulting decline in oil prices. We created an infographic on oil production from OPEC+.

🌐 The most promising scenario for the future of the G20 group is the strengthening of the G20+ framework.

There are two key areas for improvement:

1️⃣ First, it is necessary to shift the balance within the G20 between Western and non-Western countries towards increased representation of the Global South and non-West.

2️⃣ Second, the invited G20+ members should not only be participants at the summit meetings, but also engage in all other G20 activities throughout the year.

Oleg Barabanov, Programme Director of the Valdai Discussion Club, reflects on various scenarios for the evolution of the G20.
