🌏 Strategic Behaviour of Asia in an Era of Turbulence: Day 1 of the Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club
On Monday, December 4, 2023, the 14th Asian Conference of the Valdai Club opened in Moscow with the participation of experts from India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia and Japan. On the first day of the conference, two working sessions took place.
1️⃣ During the first, open session, the broadcast of which is available on the valdaiclub.com website, experts discussed the most important processes of regional development in Asia. Timofei Bordachev, programme director of the Valdai Club, noted that for a long time Russian policy was predicated on the belief that Asia is a region of peace and sustainable development, that it is not subject to the destructive trends observed in Europe. Today, processes are taking place that raise alarm about how relations between Russia and Asia will develop amid less favourable international political conditions.
2️⃣ The second, closed-door session was devoted to the potential for easing international tension. During the session, the thesis was expressed that the only conflict in Asia that threatens Russian strategic interests is the conflict between India and China.

🧩🌐 In the case of environmental degradation is global warming, whereas in the case of globalization degradation it is global harming.
The world has several poles now, like the USA, China, EU, and BRICS. Regionalism is the ineluctable byproduct of the interaction between the multiple poles of political power in the world. It is also a byproduct of another tendency amongst nations, i. e. to move away from multilateralism towards minilateralism.
Multilateral institutions like the UN and WTO have apparently failed to resolve serious conflicts and differences between the member states. As a result, small groups which share an agenda on geo-politics and economics have started emerging.
The world today and particularly the developing nations need a humane and inclusive mode of globalisation. Erecting tariff barriers and sanctioning competitors in the name of de-risking and decoupling is fuelling unnecessary tensions in an already anarchic world state system and preventing a common approach to combat poverty, hunger, disease and the vagaries of climate change.
All nations need to respect the economic and security sensitivities of others, writes Raashid Wali Janjua, Director Research at the Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI).

Malaysia continues to strengthen its position in the region and become one of the leading players in Asia and a member of BRICS. The country has also continued to develop economic relations with Russia and pursue an independent foreign policy, avoiding participation in Western restrictive measures.
👥 More than 100 experts from Russia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Pakistan will take part in the Asian conference. Andrei Rudenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia will speak as honorary guests at the conference.
Russia has always maintained constructive relations with Asian countries, being itself an integral part of the Asia-Pacific region. The “pivot to the East” announced in the 2010s made Asia one of the priorities of modern Russian foreign policy.
The main idea of the discussions at the 15th Asian conference is the following: the world is moving towards a polycentric structure that will be based on cooperation within individual regions. Since the Asia-Pacific is one of the leading centers of global development, it is there, in particular, that we should look for answers to modern challenges and ideas for a project capable of uniting humanity beyond the inevitable geopolitical differences.
📌 The goal of the upcoming conference is to have an open and in-depth discussion on Russian and Asian perspectives on the most significant issues of global and regional development and cooperation. Organizers see the goal as a joint effort to find solutions to current challenges.
The conference sessions are structured in line with this goal. They include an opening session, five thematic discussions, a summary of the day’s proceedings, and a closing session. The first day of the Asia conference will be fully open to media coverage and live streaming. On the second day, sessions will be conducted in the Chatham House format, and the conference closing will be open to media. Additionally, journalists will have the opportunity to interact with conference participants; media representatives of speakers will also be invited for special interviews.
