🎥 At 9:30 Moscow time, Session 6 of the Valdai Club’s 19th Annual Meeting, titled “Values in the Modern World. What Is Their Balance for Genuine Equality?”, will start.
The modern political map of the world was formed in the second half of the twentieth century, decolonization being the single most important event that shaped it. However, although many decades have passed since the collapse of the colonial empires, the balance of interests between the former colonialists and those who were freed from their oppression has not been established. The West still dominates, albeit by other means. But genuine equality in terms of mutual respect and mutual opportunities has not yet arrived. How can we ensure a fair balance in the new world – not only political and economic, but also cultural and ideological?

LIVE: Values in the Modern World. What Is Their Balance for Genuine Equality? Sixth Session of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai…
How can we ensure a fair balance in the new world – not only political and economic, but also cultural and ideological? Participants of the sixth session of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club will try to answer this question.
🪙 ‘Sanctions Tsunami’ and ‘Economy of Distrust’: Second Day of the Valdai Discussion Club Annual Meeting
On Tuesday, October 25, the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Club continued. On this day, three sessions dedicated to economic topics were held; in addition, the Club's experts met with high-ranking representatives of the Russian authorities.
At a meeting with Russian presidential aide Maxim Oreshkin, the Valdai Club experts discussed the economic war unleashed by the West against Russia and the reasons why the Russian economy manages to survive despite unprecedented sanctions pressure. Oreshkin also shared his views on what could serve as a more just global economic model; one which could open up opportunities for countries to pursue joint development independently and without the dictates of the West.
The third session, titled "Economic Warfare as a Defining Trend in Global Development," was open to the media; the recording of the broadcast can be viewed on our website. The main target of the economic war is Russia, but the entire planet feels its consequences. The Western (above all, the American) elites have an ingrained notion that the so-called sanctions (which would be more correctly called unilateral restrictive measures, since legitimate sanctions can only be imposed by the UN Security Council) are a cheap and politically acceptable alternative to war, and that they are easier to “sell” to the electorate.
The fourth session was devoted to energy and food security: areas where man-made crises erupted in 2022. Enough food is produced in the world to feed everyone, the experts noted; the problem is in its distribution. Today, the threat to the food security of mankind is the growing disparity in prices between the market of Russia and other countries. Meanwhile, companies from Europe and the US receive direct instructions not to service Russian exports, which is an irrational and unethical decision. Barriers to trade are erected which contradict the rules of the WTO; for the sake of a nation’s ego, they will unbalance the markets. In general, there are three main groups of causes of global hunger: armed conflicts, economic upheavals and the negative effects of climate change.
The fifth session of the conference was dedicated to the crisis of globalisation and global governance institutions. Globalisation - as well as deglobalisation - cannot be seen in isolation from the role of the United States in the global economy. Meanwhile, the institutions of the Bretton Woods system discredited themselves, the participants of the session noted, and the UN Charter is the only reference point in the development of rules for the international system.
At the end of the second day of the conference, the Valdai Club experts met with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak and discussed the energy policy of Russia and the Western countries in the context of the “sanctions tsunami”. Novak spoke about the situation on the world energy markets and about the prospects for Russia's cooperation with international partners, including within the framework of the OPEC+ deal.

🇻🇪 Economic warfare, therefore, is not a new phenomenon for Latin America, but rather a non-military tool aimed at coercing whole populations into pursuing regime change with an expected outcome that is favourable to US foreign policy objectives.
Nixon making the economy of Allende’s Chile “scream”, the blockade of Cuba that is over 60 years old, and the more recent “maximum pressure” campaign against Venezuela are just several examples.
In today’s context of transformation, the aspiration of maintaining US hegemony rests on the waging of a hybrid war – which includes an economic component – of worldwide proportions against all its adversaries, not just Russia or China.
The use unilateral coercive measures, as US “sanctions” should correctly be labelled, can have damaging effects on large populations that are as serious as those of conventional warfare. They place development and survival at risk and challenge the principles and values agreed upon by the international community in the United Nations Charter. As a new pluri-polar world order is emerging, resistance to this mechanism of economic warfare is not only possible, but also necessary.
In the case of Venezuela, the US sanctions policy has succeeded in inflicting pain but it has failed in transforming that sentiment into the change of government desired by US policymakers. Rather, it has strengthened Venezuelan resilience and has led to creative and audacious measures and partnerships, writes Carlos Ron, Venezuela's deputy foreign minister for North American affairs, for the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club.

🔄 Mediation is the participation in a dispute or conflict by a third, neutral party.
The goal is to resolve the dispute in a controlled, iterative process. Nowadays, mediation is used to resolve conflicts, which vary widely in their cause, scale and severity. Despite the fact that the UN can be considered the main mediator, there are at least four more types of mediators.

📳 It is safe to say that media and social media platforms are leading the world and dictating the prospects of war and peace, sowing love and justice or resentment and hate.
Information technology and social media can have a destructive role by misleading public opinion, spinning truths, blurring facts, feeding nationalist and religious extremism, triggering anger, inciting the masses and spreading negative publicity.
In that sense and within that role, the media and social media play a crucial and advanced part in rallying the masses, causing strife and division, inciting to fight and undermining peace and justice.
Communications and the media can also play a constructive role by encouraging openness and closeness, by reinforcing the culture of dialogue, serving righteousness and justice, and allowing positive interaction between cultures, civilizations and religions, as well as establishing the rules and concepts of communal, societal and national behaviors, based on virtue, justice and peace.
The communications revolution took the world by storm and changed its course, political landscape, economic and social behavior, and had a significant impact on shaping and turning public opinion, writes Amal Abou Zeid, Adviser to the President of Lebanon, for the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club.

₽ We are witnessing a sharp imbalance in the exchange rates of the so-called collective West.
The euro collapsed to almost below the 1:1 ratio to the US dollar - the pound sterling has rushed to the same place and the Swiss franc exchange rate has been bouncing back and forth for a long time.
As some economists bitterly joke, these currencies can be safely replaced by the US dollar: they have caught up with it and it is already easier for them to become a single currency.
The rublification of all trade and investment relations between Russia and its partners is a first and very important step on the way from currency sovereignty to a new role for the ruble as a reliable alternative to other currencies, writes Kubatbek Rakhimov, Executive Director of the Applicata Center for Strategic Decisions Public Foundation, Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic (2019-2020).

How can we ensure a fair balance in the new world – not only political and economic, but also cultural and ideological? Participants of the sixth session of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club will try to answer this question.
⏰ Good morning! Today is Day 4 of the Valdai Club’s 19th Annual Meeting, titled “A Post-Hegemonic World: Justice and Security for Everyone”.
📆 Programme for October 27, Thursday
10:00 – 12:00 — Session 10. The World That Crumbled: Lessons for the Future from the 2022 Military-Political Crisis
The institutions of world governance that were established in the second half of the twentieth century and provided a certain framework for international players are no longer working. The situation in world politics has returned to the historical norm: chaotic competition, which can only be limited by the balance of power of the opposing sides. Will there ever be a new system of rules and governance structures? What could it look like? Or has the year 2022 opened up a period of indefinite and dangerous instability?

Programme of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club
The 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, titled “A Post-Hegemonic World: Justice and Security for Everyone” will be held on October 24-27, 2022 in Moscow.
🌐 Values, Technology and Myths about Russia: The Third Day of the 19th Valdai Club Annual Meeting
On Wednesday, October 26, as part of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, four thematic sessions were held on humanitarian issues - values, communications and technology. During a special session, held as an open discussion, the experts discussed the image of Russia in the world.
The sixth session of the conference (he recording of the broadcast is available on www.valdaiclub.com) was devoted to values in the modern world.
During the seventh session, experts discussed the role of communications in our world. They stated that the Internet, which was created so that everyone could instantly get access to the entire array of knowledge accumulated by mankind, has become in many ways a tool for manipulating public consciousness. The dominance of American companies in the communications market plays a big role - and here one can draw a parallel with the discursive power of the West, discussed on the first day of the Annual Meeting.
Information campaigns conducted through traditional and online media, as well as social networks, are part of the hybrid war of the West against Russia, just like the sanctions discussed the day before. Perhaps an even more formidable aspect of hybrid warfare is the technological blockade, which became the theme of the eighth session.
Anticipating the topic of the next session, the experts touched upon the topic of military mobilisation. It was noted that the announcement of partial mobilisation provoked an outflow of scientific personnel from Russia. Measures must be taken to ensure the return of scientists who have left the country.
The ninth session was devoted to mobilisation in a broad sense. In sociological terms, mobilisation means that a significant part of society is preoccupied with the same problems. Such an “assembly” of society leads to its polarisation, when sharp contradictions (including intergenerational ones) arise between people who evaluate the same events differently.
Comprehension of what is happening leads to a "reassembly". The attitude of people to such concepts as the West, capitalism and individualism is changing; the idea that the state of the world will be eternal is dying out.
All this does not fit well into the stereotypical image of the Russian state machine as rigid and non-adaptive. A special session was devoted to stereotypes and myths about Russia, that took place in the format of an open discussion. The topic sparked great interest among experts, and the main conclusion of the discussion can be formulated as follows: Russia for years has been investing in creating a positive image for itself in the West, while ignoring the "third world". The result is a vacuum, which the people of the Global South are filling with information from the Western sources. Meanwhile, properly in the Global South there is a demand for Russia, which is largely connected with the legacy of the Soviet period. The Soviet Union projected the image of a strong, just state, fighting colonialism, and today it is most missed by those who are sympathetic to Russia.

🌾 Amid the current geopolitical and economic shocks, the global economy has entered a period of turbulence and structural transformation.
Since the beginning of 2022, the total cost of energy resources in the world has increased by almost 40%. The growth in the cost of raw agricultural materials reached 20% in May-June. Since then, prices have declined, but how sustainable this decline is remains a big question.
Current geopolitical divisions are causing global markets to stop functioning normally. Markets themselves have become fragmented, supply chains are more risky, and incentives to invest and expand production have weakened, writes Marsel Salikhov, President of the Institute for Energy and Finance Foundation, for the 19th Annual Valdai Club Meeting.
