“Yesterday I received a horrible video from the relatives of Russian POWs. It features a mother receiving a footage of her son being tortured and threatened with death unless the anonymous ‘non-humans’ receive a ransom for his life.

I urge:

🇺🇦 the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rughts;
🇺🇳 the UN Committee Against Torture;
🇪🇺 the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture;
🇺🇳 the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights;
⛑ the International Committee of the Red Cross

to immediately demand from the Ukrainian side adherence to the 1949 Geneva Conventions, which prohibit torture, inhuman and degrading treatment of POWs”.

❗️ It seems that that whoever from the Armed Forces of Ukraine behind the ransom video has sunk to a new ISIS-level low.

Statement by Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Gennady Gatilov:

❗️ We continue to draw attention of relevant international bodies to the lawlessness committed by official Riga against the editor-in-chief of Sputnik Lithuania, Marat Kasem.

🤐 The arrest on January 5, 2023, of this "undesirable" journalist to the Latvian authorities under far–fetched pretexts is nothing but a ruthless oppression of alternative viewpoints and an attempt to intimidate "dissident" media.

📄 We have sent official notes to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and the Special Rapporteur of the HRC on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression Irene Khan urging them to pay the closest attention to this incident.

✅ We expect to receive a response from them on the ongoing political persecution of representatives of the Russian-speaking journalistic community in Latvia.

🤐 Арест 5 января с.г. «неугодного» для латвийских властей журналиста под надуманными предлогами – не что иное, как грубая борьба с альтернативными точками зрения и попытка запугать «инакомыслящие» СМИ.

📄 Нами направлены официальные ноты в адрес Верховного комиссара ООН по правам человека Ф.Тюрка и Спецдокладчика СПЧ по вопросу о поощрении и защите права на свободу мнений и их свободное выражение И.Хан с требованием уделить самое пристальное внимание данному сюжету.

✅ Рассчитываем на получение от них реакции на продолжающееся политическое преследование представителей русскоязычного журналистского сообщества в Латвии.

🇷🇺🇹🇷📞 Состоялся телефонный разговор Президента России В.В.Путина с Президентом Турции Р.Т.Эрдоганом.

С обеих сторон подтверждён настрой на дальнейшее комплексное развитие российско-турецкого сотрудничества. В числе приоритетов – взаимодействие в сфере энергетики, включая поставки российского природного газа и создание в Турции регионального газового «хаба».

Продолжен обмен мнениями по ситуации вокруг Украины. В частности, по инициативе турецкой стороны и с учётом недавних контактов в Анкаре уполномоченных России и Украины по правам человека затронут вопрос об обмене пленными, в первую очередь ранеными.

Рассмотрен ход реализации «пакетных» стамбульских договоренностей от 22 июля 2022 года о вывозе украинского зерна из черноморских портов и разблокировании поставок продовольствия и удобрений из России.

Кроме того, обсуждены вопросы нормализации турецко-сирийских отношений, в том числе в контексте инициативы Анкары о запуске консультаций с участием российских, турецких и сирийских представителей. Отмечена также практическая значимость совместной работы России, Турции и Ирана в рамках Астанинского процесса содействия сирийскому урегулированию.

🇷🇺🇹🇷📞 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation.

The Presidents reaffirmed their intention to further develop comprehensive cooperation between Russia and Türkiye. Their priorities include energy cooperation, in part, supplies of Russian natural gas and the creation of a regional gas hub in Türkiye.

The Presidents continued exchanging views on the developments around Ukraine. They reviewed the exchange of POWs, primarily the wounded, at Türkiye’s initiative and with account for the recent meetings of the Russian and Ukrainian human rights commissioners in Ankara.

Vladimir Putin emphasised the Kiev regime’s destructive policy of continuing to intensify the hostilities with the support of its Western sponsors, which are still sending more arms and combat equipment to Ukraine. Kiev’s hypocritical policy is illustrated by its refusal to accept a proposal on a ceasefire during the Orthodox Christmas.

The Presidents discussed the implementation of the Istanbul package agreements of July 22, 2022, on Ukrainian grain exports from Black Sea ports and the unblocking of food and fertiliser shipments from Russia.

In addition, the Presidents discussed ways to normalise relations between Türkiye and Syria, including Ankara’s initiative to launch consultations with the participation of Russian, Türkish and Syrian representatives. They also noted the practical importance of joint efforts by Russia, Türkiye and Iran to promote Syrian settlement in the context of the Astana agreements.

On January 12, 1946, the main body of the United Nations responsible for international peace and security - the Security Council (#UNSC) - was created.

The Security Council held its first meeting on January 17, 1946 at Church House, Westminster, London.

The Soviet delegation was headed by Andrei Gromyko, the first Soviet diplomat to hold the post of Permanent Representative of the Soviet Union to the United Nations.
