Another member of the public taking the pledge

Scrapping the official Digital ID scheme is only the first step

This is why The Pledge still matters: not just to stop one Digital ID scheme, but to ensure the same outcome isn't reached through a different route

A “social media ban for children” will ultimately mean ID checks for all of us before we can speak online.

There is nothing safe about a society where ordinary people must be identified, monitored, and recorded simply to participate.

"How does one prove that you are an adult? People are really worried this is Digital ID by the back door"

- Zia Yusuf

We are told this is about "protecting children from social media"

But the practical direction of travel points somewhere else:

Access to services will depend on proving age or identity, and anonymous users - if they are not shut out entirely - will increasingly be treated as suspect

ONE LOGIN: "This will bring together every bit of data they have on us" - (David Davis MP)

NON-DIGITAL GUARANTEE: We call for a clear statutory safeguard ensuring that participation in any digital identity system such as One Login remains strictly voluntary

These alternative routes must be genuinely equivalent in accessibility and must not be indirectly weakened, deprioritised, or phased out over time

We must also stop other government systems evolving into a de facto Digital ID through expansion, function creep or the loss of offline alternatives

4 ways to protect kids online - without government interference🔒

1. Does every child need a device at all?
If you decide they do, a simple call & text phone may be enough. If internet access is needed, use smartphones with parental controls or monitored devices. Guidance is available from Protect Young Eyes.

2. Parental controls:
YouTube uses Family Link/YouTube Kids, Instagram has private teen accounts and Family Centre, TikTok uses Family Pairing, WhatsApp only offers privacy settings, and Facebook uses privacy settings plus Family Centre tools.

3. Parental controls (on devices):
Use Microsoft Family Safety on Windows, Screen Time on Apple devices, and Content & Privacy Restrictions on phones. Turn on Safe Search or use child‑friendly search engines like Kiddle.

4. Restrict incoming content:
Most home routers let you block adult or unsafe sites for every device by using parental, control settings or adding sites to a blocklist.

(ONE LOGIN) NON-DIGITAL GUARANTEE: We call for a clear statutory safeguard ensuring that participation in any digital identity system such as One Login remains strictly voluntary

People must retain full access to government interactions through non-digital and alternative channels - as a matter of resilience, as well as access - without penalty, additional cost, or any reduction in quality of service compared to digital routes

These alternative routes must be genuinely equivalent in accessibility and must not be indirectly weakened, deprioritised, or phased out over time

TBI is one of the loudest advocates for state-run Digital ID

Despite Andy Burnham scrapping Digital ID, they’re still trying to bring it in through many different routes forcing people into digital verification just to participate in society

So who’s really steering the agenda?

"They’re imposing an infrastructure where we’re going to have to digitally verify everywhere"

We welcome Andy Burnham’s cancellation of national digital ID plans following our year-long campaign - but grave “backdoor” privacy risks still remain across Labour’s online policy agenda

Any expansion of the Government’s digital wallet, GOV UK app, and One Login - a centralised access system requiring citizens to hand over private data - must be strictly curtailed, or it risks becoming a “de facto” digital ID system

What we're seeing with Anthony Fauci not answering questions is very revealing

We must also ensure that connected systems such as GOV UK One Login, the GOV UK App and Government Wallet cannot become Digital ID in all but name through expansion, function creep or the erosion of offline alternatives

The real test is not what the system is called, but what it can do, how widely it can be used, and whether people remain free to live without relying on it - or being forced to

We've been campaigning across the UK on this issue for the past year

A year ago - anticipating the official announcement -we projected NO TO DIGITAL ID onto the Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge

In September, we followed that with protests, projections and other stunts across Liverpool during the Labour Party Conference

Throughout the autumn, we mobilised local groups to deliver hundreds of thousands of leaflets, debated Labour Together on Digital ID at the Battle of Ideas, and brought 1,500 people together at our own event

A stark reminder: centralising more and more of our personal data creates bigger risks when things go wrong

Yet the Govt continues to push systems like One Login, the GOV UK App and Government Wallet - all built around collecting and connecting more of our information

They call it "convenience"

But how convenient is it when your identity details are stolen and sold online?
