CAIR sues Texas Governor Over ‘Baseless’ Terrorist Designation:

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton after Abbott designated CAIR’s Texas chapter a “foreign terrorist organization.”

The suit argues the designation is unconstitutional and defamatory, warning that allowing governors to unilaterally brand civil rights groups as terrorists threatens free speech nationwide.

⚡

Abbott, a staunch supporter of ~~Israel~~, has increasingly targeted pro-Palestine advocates, including student protesters at Texas universities.

⚡

His designation of CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood bars them from acquiring land and allows the state to shut down their activities, something which has drawn sharp condemnation from Democrats, and civil rights organizations.

In a statement, CAIR Litigation Director Lena Masri said:
"The lawsuit we have filed today is our first step towards defeating Governor Abbott again so that our nation protects free speech and due process for all Americans.

"No civil rights organizations are safe if a governor can baselessly and unilaterally declare any of them terrorist groups, ban them from buying land, and threaten them with closure. We have beaten Greg Abbott's attacks on the First Amendment before, and God willing, we will do it again now."
