More issues with the latest Patch Tuesday: Microsoft investigates a Windows 11 boot failure that followed the January 2026 security update released on January 13. Affected devices display a black screen with the error message "Your device ran into a problem and needs a restart" and the stop code "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME." The issue prevents normal system startup and requires manual recovery procedures.

The problem impacts Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft characterizes affected devices as "limited in number" but has not disclosed the root cause or provided an official workaround.

Affected users must access the Windows Recovery Environment to manually uninstall update KB5074109.

BREAKING: OnePlus, Oppo and Realme are bricking smartphones with the latest update. Thanks to silently rolling out ARB by the Oplus Group

The Oplus group comprising of Oppo, OnePlus and Realme have started bricking users devices by introducing the Anti Rollback Feature (ARB) silently without any prior notifications or warning. The ARB have been introduced to patch the "9008 exploit" which let users unlock the bootloader of almost ALL Qualcomm devices of the Oplus group.

Remember, many users successfully unlocked the bootloader of Find X7 Ultra? Yeah, the Oplus group is patching that very exploit.

ARB introduction:
- ColorOS/ OOS versions ending in .500/.501/.503
- January 2026 Update or later

In these versions, the anti-rollback fuse is blown (updating the CPU/XBL security version). In other words, its value will be changed from 0 to 1. Since it is embedded in the motherboard, the only way to revert to its default state 0 is by replacing the motherboard. OnePlus EDL Tool or Chimera Tool CANNOT recover your device as its hardware level fuse is blown.

As for why Oplus group didn't issue warning or advises before rolling the update, that's been done so that once users install the latest update, they cannot rollback again to unlock the bootloader if they did not do that previously. Thus, the Oppo and OnePlus gang chose to simply brick their users devices.

Since OnePlus still allows bootloader unlocking, users can still unlock their devices after this update. However, they can NEVER roll back to a previous version as it will result in a HARDBRICK. Same goes for Oppo and Realme as downgrading will result in a permanent hard-brick.

OnePlus has also REMOVED the download links for the OnePlus 13 (atleast) downgrade firmware for all regions today! So, doing a downgrade via the official way i.e. a Local Install, might also lead to a bricked device!

Xiaomi starts bricking devices with HyperOS 3 update if you are using Global builds on a device purchased from China

A new HyperOS 3 update from Xiaomi is bricking certain devices, especially imported smartphones from the China which are running Global ROMs. Thankfully, its a soft brick and not a permanent hard-brick.

Note: Xiaomi has been doing this for a long time. However, people figured out a bypass. Thus, the new HyperOS 3 fixes the bypass, completely preventing users from flashing global ROMs on a China device

Basically, the update introduces a region lock check that compares the phone’s hardware to its software region. So if the software doesn’t match the hardware’s intended market, the OS fails to boot and traps the device in recovery or a bootloop condition instead of loading normally. Xiaomi considers converted ROMs unauthorised software installs, so the company is not classifying this as a β€œbug.”

If you are affected
, then Force Restart Repeatedly for 10–15 times because it prompts the system into an emergency rollback mode, which restores the earlier HyperOS build that’s compatible with your converted ROM. Once this rollback completes, your phone should boot normally again

Microsoft has officially confirmed it provides BitLocker recovery passwords to law enforcement agencies/FBI upon receiving valid legal requests. These keys grant local access to encrypted volumes on Windows devices.

In Windows 11, when an administrator first signs into Windows using a Microsoft account, the system encrypts drives and uploads the recovery password to Microsoft's cloud service.

Users concerned about third party access may download their recovery password from account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey and store it securely offline. Deleting the cloud copy prevents Microsoft from retrieving it later. BitLocker continues to protect data effectively against unauthorized access during device loss, theft, or repair scenarios. However, the key won't be stored in the cloud any longer:

Microsoft claims to receive approximately 20 requests annually from the FBI for BitLocker encryption keys. However, the company is unable to satisfy most of the requests because the keys in question have never been uploaded to the Microsoft cloud.

While it's no secret that Windows uploads BitLocker keys to the cloud, the fact that the keys are fully accessible/stored without encryption makes BitLocker protection less secure, less trustworthy, and less attractive.

The information comes from Forbes.

Apple is bringing a new feature to enhance privacy

Apple has added a new feature in iOS 26.3 beta 3: Limit precise location from cellular networks

This feature will limit the precision of your location data that is available to mobile networks. Also, it will not impact location sharing during emergencies.

Requires an iPhone with an Apple in-house modem atleast C1:
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 16e
- iPad Pro (M5)

Upcoming iPhone 18 series (atleast non-pro) will also feature Apple's in-house modem instead of using Qualcomm modem.

New Android Theft Protection fearures
Improvements coming to Android 16+
- A toggle for Failed Authentication Lock: Decides whether to lock the device after several incorrect authentication attempts (enabled in Android 15+ devices by default).
- Identity Check (utilize biometric authentication outside of trusted places) has been expanded to cover all services that use biometric authentication, including third-party apps.
- Lockout time has been increased after several failed attempts; identical incorrect guesses won't count towards your retry limit so you won't be locked out by mistake.

Miscellaneous
- Remote Lock let you add optional security question or challenge, so it can only be activated by the real owner, available for Android 10+ devices.
- In Brazil, Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock is enabled by default for new Android devices.
