🇷🇸BELGRADE, May 9 (Reuters) - The Russian national anthem was played in Belgrade on Monday as hundreds of Serbians, including senior government officials, assembled for Victory Day, showing the political strain of a country long aligned with Moscow but now trying to join the EU.

Serbia, which was bombed by NATO two decades ago and has had close cultural ties with Russia for centuries, has fended off pressure to take sides since Russia invaded Ukraine, including calls from the West that it join sanctions against Moscow.

Several hundred people holding pictures of ancestors who fought in World War Two gathered in late morning on Monday in a city park to march to a cemetery.

The national anthems of Russia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Serbia were played as ambassadors and ministers laid wreaths at a memorial. Ukraine's ambassador had laid wreaths the previous day, with no Serbian officials present.

"Should I fake cry?" one of the group asks.

🇷🇺MOSCOW, May 9. /TASS/. Ukraine’s General Staff with direct participation of advisers from the US and the UK plotted provocation to seize Snake Island, but it was foiled by Russia’s forces, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said on Monday.

"Since May 7 at the direct order of Vladimir Zelensky the Ukrainian General Staff with the direct participation of advisers from the US and the UK had plotted a major provocation on seizing Snake Island <…>. Due to professional steps by a unit of Russia’s Armed Forces on the island the Ukrainian provocation was foiled. The enemy sustained major losses," Konashenkov said.

According to him, over the past two days the Kiev regime made several desperate attempts of carrying out an airborne and amphibious landing on Snake Island, which is of major importance for ensuring control over the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

More than 50 Ukrainian saboteurs were destroyed during an attempt to capture Snake Island and the bodies of 24 Ukrainian servicemen remain on the shore, Konashenkov said. "As a result of a foolish provocation [by Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky only during the landing and an attempt to establish a foothold on the island more than 50 Ukrainian saboteurs were destroyed. Twenty-four bodies of the killed Ukrainian servicemen remain on the shore of Snake Island," Konashenkov stressed.

During the operation to repel attacks on the island, four Ukrainian aircraft were downed in the air, including three Su-24 and one Su-27, three Mi-8 helicopters with paratroopers onboard and one Mi-24 helicopter. Also during the airborne landing attempt on May 8 night three Ukrainian Project 58181 Centaur-class armored assault craft with Ukraine’s Navy personnel were destroyed.

Russia Pre-emptively Repelled Aggression With Ukraine Op, Says Putin in Victory Day Speech

❗“We saw how the military infrastructure was unfolding, how hundreds of foreign advisers had begun to work there, with the most modern weapons being regularly delivered from NATO countries. The danger was growing every day. Russia offered a pre-emptive rebuff to the aggression - this was a forced, timely move and the only correct decision, one taken by a strong and independent country," Putin said, speaking at the Victory Parade in Moscow.

The Russian President said that NATO countries had refused to listen to the Russian Federation, as they had been preparing an attack on Crimea.
“Preparations had been underway for another punitive operation in the Donbass, an invasion of our historical lands, including Crimea," said Putin on Red Square.

According to Vladimir Putin, NATO had started actively developing the military of territories adjacent to the Russian Federation, thus creating an unacceptable threat to this country directly at its borders.
“Everything indicated that a clash with neo-Nazis, Bandera-followers - in whom the United States and its allies had invested - was inevitable," emphasised Putin.

❗Furthermore, Putin underscored that Kiev had also announced that it could be in the market for buying nuclear weapons.

❗The Russian President declared that it was an honourable duty to preserve the memory of those who crushed Nazism during the Second World War.

“We are proud of the unconquered, valiant generation of victors, the fact that we are their heirs, and it is our duty to keep alive the memory of those who vanquished Nazism, who bequeathed to us the need to be vigilant and do everything so that the horror of a global war never recurs,” the president said.
The West, according to Putin, has been denigrating the remarkable courage of those whose sacrifices in the Great Patriotic war had delivered victory, while praising the traitors.

❗Speaking at the Victory Parade in Moscow's Red Square, the head of state noted that Russia would never abandon respect for all peoples and cultures and traditional values, which the West has decided to cancel.
"Such moral degradation formed the basis for cynical falsifications of the history of the Second World War, the incitement of Russophobia, praising traitors, and mocking the memory of the victims," Putin said.

❗Russia's president said that taking part in the parade in Red Square were soldiers and officers from many regions of the country, including those who had arrived directly from the combat zone in the Donbass.
Servicemen of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) have been fighting alongside the Russian military in the special military operation in Ukraine, aimed at ending the "genocide" of the Donbass people.

Joe Biden signed a law on the Lend-Lease program with Ukraine. It expands the powers of the US President and allows free supply of weapons with a deferred payment to another country for the first time since the WW2.
