Motivation Letter Breakdown: University of California
StudyQA fam, not every sample you find online is actually strong. Today we’re dissecting a UC applicant’s motivation letter—check out our step-by-step review below.
1️⃣ The Hook
The candidate compares coding to art and a website to a bridge connecting student-athletes with their families.
What worked:
- Bold opening: Framing HTML as a spoken language grabs attention.
- Evidence of real impact: The author built a support site for high-school athletes.
- Leadership: They assembled the team and designed the user interface.
What fell short:
- Overused phrasing: The “Some people… I…” structure is clichéd in tech essays.
- Weak transition: After the punchy opener, two paragraphs of abstract reflections on code lose focus—over 120 words with no personal story.
- Lack of metrics: No data on user numbers or measurable impact. Admissions need to see why this project matters and how it maps to your UC ambitions.
2️⃣ Our Improvement Formula: P-P-P-R
Problem: Open with a vivid scene (e.g., an empty stadium, silent stands).
Process: Describe the tech stack, challenges you solved, and UX decisions.
Product: Provide hard numbers—user growth, coach testimonials, usage stats.
Reflection/Relation: Explain how this project inspired your passion for Computer Science and community-building at UC.
Use P-P-P-R in your next drafts to keep admissions focused on your story and achievements.
🎁 Exclusive Collection: Real Letters & Templates

Two of our students received offers to Minerva University 🇺🇸
At StudyQA, we’re experiencing another hot summer filled with offers from the world’s top universities. Next up is Minerva University, which has accepted two of our students.
Today we’re telling you about the university and sharing tips on how you can get in too.
Founded in 2012 in the USA, Minerva University is a private non-profit institution that has reimagined everything we thought we knew about higher education. Minerva does not have a traditional campus: instead, students learn and live in different cities around the world, and classes are held online in an interactive format.
How is the program structured?
In the first year, students are in San Francisco, USA, where they meet each other, go through orientation, and start their studies. Each semester they move to a new city! These include Buenos Aires, Berlin, Taipei, Seoul, London, Hyderabad and others.
Classes take place online on Minerva’s own platform, Forum. These are not lectures but interactive discussions, debates, and group projects.
Instead of rote learning, students work on real-world case studies and collaborate with local organizations and companies.
How much does it cost?
Tuition fees are lower than at most top US universities. There are grants and scholarships that make education accessible to talented students from around the world.
How to apply?
The selection process is very competitive but does not require the SAT/ACT. It’s important to demonstrate not only academic achievements but also motivation, leadership skills, and creative thinking. Your portfolio, essays, and interview all play a role.
How to prepare and what portfolio do you need?
We’ve provided a winning portfolio from one of our students and a step-by-step preparation plan above in the cards.
If you want guaranteed admission to Minerva and to study in multiple countries, we invite you to a free consultation. We’ll explain how to make your dream come true with an advisor

Alumni Network: How Graduates from Your Dream University Can Boost Your Application
StudyQA fam, here’s a hack we haven’t covered yet—but it really works. Alumni aren’t just former students; they’ve walked your path, know all the hidden pitfalls, and can make the difference between “just submitting an application” and “receiving a funded offer.”
Admissions committees read the same cover letters and CVs every day—but insider tips and personal recommendations from alumni often become the X-factor.
😁Where to find alumni
Official alumni/community groups on the university website
LinkedIn: go to the university’s page, select “Alumni,” then filter by country or programme
Telegram/WhatsApp groups and Facebook communities (search “University Name + alumni”)
Alumni events and open days (often free for prospective students)
What alumni can do for you?
- Share application and personal-statement tips you won’t find on the university website
- Point out common mistakes applicants make—and how to avoid them
- Offer insider info on current scholarships and internships (including those awarded via alumni referrals)
➡️ We’ve provided a template for your outreach email in the attachments.
⚡️ Want to be absolutely sure your application stands out? Book a free consultation with StudyQA. We’ll pair you with a advisors who’s been there, handled every challenge, and will also help you with your visa, personal statements, and communication with the university: https://clck.ru/3NGmad
