#sputnikviral | ๐ช๐ธ๐ Dozens of horses walk through the bonfires during the Las Luminaria ceremony in Spain
Las Luminarias, a Spanish festival celebrated on the eve of Saint Anthony's Day (January 17), features riders jumping their horses over huge bonfires lit in the village streets, a ceremony that blends fire and animals.
Believed to purify animals through fire and smoke, the Las Luminarias bonfire jump is said to offer protection for a year. This tradition, over 300 years old, emerged during a European plague to safeguard working horses. Before the ritual, horses are prepared with braided manes and doused in water and blessed by a priest.

๐๐ Early humans in modern Ethiopia showed advanced toolmaking skills, study reveals
A new international study, led by Israeli paleoanthropologist Erella Hovers and Ethiopian archeologist Tegenu Gossa of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, shows that early humans in the Pleistocene era made complex decisions about selecting stones for their tools. Excavations at the Melka Wakena site in Ethiopia revealed that toolmakers chose materials based on how well different stones would perform specific tasks, not randomly.
๐ฃ "The deliberate selection of materials influenced the surface changes of the tools, demonstrating that differences in archaeological finds are not random," said Dr. Joรฃo Marreiros, Portuguese researcher and director of the TraCEr, Laboratory for Traceology and Controlled Experiments, in Germany.
This initial study provides insights into Acheulian toolmaking, an archaeological industry of stone tool manufacture. Future research is expected to investigate how tool-making activities impacted raw material selection, highlighting the crucial role of early human decisions in their evolution and environmental interactions.

๐ช๐ฌ๐ต๐ธ Egypt says 600 trucks of humanitarian aid will enter the Gaza Strip daily
๐ฃ "There's an agreement that 600 trucks will enter Gaza daily, 50 of which will carry fuel," Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated during a press conference in Cairo with Nigeria's Foreign Minister. He expressed hope that half of these trucks would be directed to northern Gaza, an area facing dire humanitarian needs.
This announcement is consistent with the details of the Israeli-Hamas ceasefire agreement, brokered with the involvement of Qatar, Egypt, and the US and set to take effect on January 19 at 8:30 a.m. local time.
The deal outlines a 42-day truce, with aspirations for a permanent end to the 15-month conflict that has claimed the lives of 46,000 Palestinians and approximately 1,500 Israelis, spilling over into Lebanon and Yemen and sparking missile exchanges between Israel and Iran.
The first phase of the agreement involves the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners of war. Israeli forces are expected to withdraw to the Gaza border, though they will remain within the Strip's boundaries initially.
The increased humanitarian aid flow, reaching 600 trucks per day, will commence immediately upon the ceasefire taking effect. In addition to essential supplies, Palestinians will receive 200,000 tents and 60,000 mobile homes.

๐ฌ๐ฑ๐บ๐ธ Greenland wants a new defense agreement directly with the US, a lawmaker says
"We are de facto a NATO country here, through Denmark. The US has a military presence. We have a defense agreement between Denmark and the US. We want to renew this, but by concluding a defense agreement only between Greenland and the US. And we can also conclude an agreement with Denmark separately. We can even conclude a bilateral agreement with the EU," Kuno Fencker, a Greenlandic lawmaker from the government coalition party Siumut told RIA Novosti.
๐ฌ On Wednesday, TV2 reported, citing a classified report from the Danish Armed Forces, that Denmark planned to build a military air base in western Greenland for a "show of force" and to increase the personnel at the Arctic Command headquarters in the Greenlandic capital of Nuuk.
In early May 2024, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said that the country's government was considering increasing its military presence in Greenland. This could include Arctic Command units in Kangerlussuaq. Poulsen also emphasised that the armed forces were looking into developing the local airfield.
๐ฉ๐ฐ According to Fencker, US President-elect Donald Trump is right that Denmark de facto has no legal rights to Greenland, as in early January, Trump said that "people really don't even know if Denmark has any legal right to" Greenland.
"Denmark colonized us and incorporated us into its territory without holding a referendum for Greenlanders. Thus, Denmark de facto has no legal rights to Greenland. That is why I agree with Donald Trump. In my opinion, they [Denmark] do not have them [legal rights to Greenland]. Thus, we have the right to self-determination," he said.

๐บ๐ธ๐จ๐ณ US president-elect Trump may visit China within his first 100 days in office, a report says
Donald Trump has expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources, while Trump's transition team did not respond to a request for comment.
โถ๏ธ The trip might be dictated by the Republican's desire to strengthen relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which had worsened between Washington and Beijing during the presidency of Joe Biden, the newspaper noted.
A final decision on the trip at the beginning of his second term has not yet been made, the publication said.
๐ On Friday, Trump and Xi Jinping spoke by phone, discussing peace and security efforts, trade and TikTok. The Republican said after the call that both leaders intended to do everything possible to make the world a more peaceful and secure place.
