While traveling through Izumo province, Musashi asked permission to test himself against the Lord Matsudaira best swordsman. The lord agreed, and Musashi using two wooden swords against his opponent's long wooden stave and defeated the retainer easily.
Impressed and prideful, Lord Matsudaira insisted on facing Musashi himself. Musashi accepted and treated him no differently: drove the lord backwards across the room until he had him against the wall and when the finishing blow came he checked his strike stopping his sword merely and tapping him.
Instead of taking offense, Lord Matsudaira acknowledged the defeat gracefully and Musashi stayed for a time to instruct him and his retainers in his style.
