A new report from the National Engineering Policy Center (NEPC) warns that the rapid growth of AI could seriously harm the environment. They state that training AI models requires massive computational power, leading to high energy and water consumption. For example, companies like Google and Microsoft are using more water each year to cool their data centers.

To prevent these negative impacts, it has been suggested that governments require tech companies to report their data centers' energy and water usage and enforce stricter sustainability standards. This way, we can mitigate serious environmental damage and develop AI in a more sustainable way.
