🚨 AI unlocks ancient secrets from 2,000-year-old Herculaneum scroll

Scientists have virtually unrolled a charred Herculaneum scroll using AI and x-ray scanning, revealing hidden Greek text for the first time in nearly 2,000 years. The scroll, carbonized by Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in AD 79, was thought to be impossible to read without destroying it. Now, AI has detected ink markings invisible to the naked eye.

Early translations suggest philosophical writings, with words like “διατροπή” (confusion/disgust). Researchers hope to uncover titles and lost works from the ancient world. The Vesuvius Challenge is even offering cash prizes to develop AI tools for decoding more of these fragile scrolls.
