Valentin A. Serov is one of the great masters of Russian painting. Today marks the 160th anniversary of his birth.
Young Valentin's potential was noticed early. Little Serov was given to study with the German engraver Karl Koepping. And already at the age of nine the boy was highly appreciated by the sculptor Mark M. Antokolsky, who advised to hire a teacher from Russian artists. It was Ilya Repin himself.
Recognition Valentin А. found during the exhibition of the Association of Peredvizhniki in 1888. There he presented the now well-known “Girl with Peaches” and “Sunlit girl”. The latter portrait he considered the most significant. Serov remembered the picturesque manner and a mixture of genres.
In 1892, Valentin A. ordered a painting “Emperor Alexander III with his family”. In 1896, he was even invited to the coronation of Nicholas II. Thus, his collection was enriched with a watercolor “The Anointing of the Emperor”. Then he continued to paint pictures for the imperial court.
At the end of the XIX century he illustrated the fables of Ivan A. Krylov. And after the death of Pavel M. Tretyakov, Valentin A. became a member of the Council of the Tretyakov Gallery . From 1898 to 1909 he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
Valentin A. Serov died as a result of a heart attack in 1911.

Завершается второй этап олимпиады Президентской библиотеки «Россия в электронном мире»
24 января 2025 года завершается второй этап олимпиады «Россия в электронном мире» по истории, обществознанию и русскому языку, которая организована Президентской библиотекой и Национальным исследовательским университетом «Высшая школа экономики».
В ходе соревнования школьники и студенты из России и зарубежных стран пробуют свои силы в каждой из дисциплин или выбирают только тот предмет, в котором разбираются лучше всего. Подведение итогов будет осуществляться по результатам индивидуального зачёта. Победители и призёры награждаются дипломами. Участники, показавшие лучшие результаты, также получат дополнительные баллы при поступлении в ряд вузов, список которых доступен на портале Президентской библиотеки.
Соревнование включает три обязательных этапа. Первый проходил с 23 сентября по 2 декабря 2024 года в дистанционном формате. Второй проводится также в дистанционном формате с 20 декабря 2024 года по 24 января 2025 года.
Заключительный этап состоится в очной форме в период с 18 по 20 марта 2025 года. Участниками третьего тура также могут стать победители и призёры олимпиады «Россия в электронном мире» предыдущего учебного года, продолжающие обучение в организациях, осуществляющих образовательную деятельность по образовательным программам основного и среднего общего образования, в форме семейного образования или самообразования, осваивающие указанные образовательные программы за рубежом, а также осваивающие образовательные программы среднего профессионального образования в области искусств. Финалисты из Санкт-Петербурга и Ленинградской области встретятся в Президентской библиотеке – в историческом здании Синода на Сенатской площади, 3, а ребята из других регионов – на площадках её электронных читальных залов, а также в Тюменском филиале учреждения.

Exhibition on Siege of Leningrad and Stalingrad Battle will be presented at the Kolkata Book Fair
The national pavilion of Russia will be welcoming visitors of the 48th Kolkata International Book Fair from January 28 to February 9, 2025. Russian House will present the exhibition of photographs on the Siege of Leningrad and the Stalingrad Battle, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War.
The pavilion will be open to visitors from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The Russian Seasons Festival opened in Manama with a gala concert by Valery Abisalovich Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre.
🎵 The soloists and the Symphony Orchestra performed arias from operas by Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as well as works by Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky and Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky.
In addition, other famous Russian groups and institutions will come to Bahrain as part of the Russian Seasons:
➡️ The National Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments of Russia named after N.P. Osipov and the State Academic Honored Dance Ensemble of Dagestan "Lezginka" will introduce the residents of the Kingdom to the culture of the peoples of Russia;
➡️ Soyuzmultfilm Studio will present the possibilities of modern Russian animation;
➡️ Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, one of the oldest ballet schools in the world, will perform its own gala concert.

Russian pavilion officially opens at the Kolkata International Book Fair
On January 30, the national pavilion of Russia has been formally inaugurated at the Kolkata International Book Fair. Maksim Kozlov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata, Grigory Antonenkov, Senior Consul and Sergey Shushin, Director of the Russian House in Kolkata, took part in the inauguration ceremony.
Russian House jointly with the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata have prepared an exhibition of historical photographs, dedicated the the 80th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, which is available to all visitors of the Russian pavilion.

30 января на Международной книжной ярмарке в Калькутте состоялось официальное открытие национального павильона России. В церемонии приняли участие генеральный консул Российской Федерации в Калькутте Максим Козлов, консул-советник Григорий Антоненков и директор Русского дома в Калькутте Сергей Шушин.

Students of rhe Moscow State Institute of Foreign Affairs visited the Russian House
On January 31, the Institute of Russian Language, Russian House in Kolkata organised an interactive session with the students of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, headed by Prof.Irina Prokofieva.

🪖 February 2 is the Day of Military Honour of Russia. 82 years ago, the Battle of Stalingrad came to an end. This date reminds us of the great feat of the Soviet army, which we will tell you about today.
The Battle of Stalingrad is considered one of the most significant events in the history of Russia. We can say that the outcome of this battle largely predetermined the future not only of our country, but also of other Soviet Republics and all countries participating in the Second World War.
🟢 It lasted 200 days. The city was defended by one and a half thousand guns.
🟢 For this feat, Stalingrad was one of the first who received the title of hero-city. Today in the city you can see many monuments that still bear the traces of the battle. For example, a grain elevator, Gergardt's mill, a laboratory at the plant “Red October”, Pavlov's House and others. But, of course, the most famous remains the complex on Mamaev Kurgan. It is there that thousands of Soviet heroes are buried, and it is there that the monument “Motherland Calls!” stands.
🟢 The Battle of Stalingrad inspired many directors to create feature films about the heroism of people. Among such films are “Soldiers” by A. Ivanov, “Revenge” by A. Stolper, “They Fought for the Motherland” by S. Bondarchuk, “The Hot Snow” by G. Yeghiazarov, “Life and Fate” by S. Ursulyak.
The Russian Houses in Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, India, Moldavia, Mongolia, Armenia and Egypt will host a series of events dedicated to the defeat of Nazi troops in the Battle of Stalingrad.

🇷🇺🇦🇪 Higher School of Economics in collaboration with the University of Humanities named after Muhammad bin Zayed launches Bachelor of Arts in Russian in Abu Dhabi
➡ This is the first Russian language program approved by the UAE Ministry of Education. It was developed by the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The training will last 4 years and will include summer and winter language schools in Moscow at the Higher School of Economics.
🎓 The educational process will take place at the University of Humanities in Abu Dhabi, and some of the specialized courses will be taught by HSE teachers.
✅ The first set of students is scheduled for 2025, with a total of 20 students. This event was a significant step in the development of academic cooperation between Russia and the UAE.

165th Anton Chekhov's birth anniversary marked in Kolkata
On February 4th, the Institute of Russian Language, Russian House in Kolkata celebrated the 165th birth anniversary of a reknowned Russian playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov.
Sergey Shushin, Director of the Russian House, gave an introductory note of importance of Chekhov's work in today's world literature. Students presented their research works on Anton Chekhov and key features of his literary style.
The exhibition on life and works of Chekhov accompanied the event.

Kerch was one of the first cities captured by German fascist invaders at the beginning of the war. The city was on the front line four times and was occupied twice.
For 320 days of occupation the city was almost completely destroyed.
A major operation Kerch-Feodosia landing in 1942 thwarted the Germans' plans for an offensive in the Caucasus. In 1943, large forces were pulled to Kerch, but the Red Army successfully conducted the Kerch-Eltigen operation in November 1943, which marked the beginning of the liberation of the Crimea.
Kerch was liberated on April 11, 1944, and in 1973 received the title of Hero-City. For its defense and liberation 153 people received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Several films were made about the events in Kerch, dedicated to the courage and heroism of the people who defended the city. Among them are "Kerch. Lost Heroes" by Levan Dabrundashvili, "Descended from Heaven" by Natalia Troshchenko, and this year is planned to release the film "Squad "S"", which will tell about a boy who went back in time and became a participant in the defense of Adzhimushkay quarries.
