This Soviet scientist decoded the Mayan script even before traveling to Mexico!
In a dusty cabinet of a Leningrad museum, a young Yuri Knorozov managed to do what scientists across the world had been struggling over for centuries. And he only visited Mexico a whopping 40 years after his epochal discovery.
The simple employee of the Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR began learning about Maya writing from a scientific article.
It was first presented as an unsolvable riddle of mankind. “What was invented by a human mind can be unraveled by another human mind,” Knorozov said later in an interview. No one in the USSR before him had ever taken on the challenge, so he decided to give it a try.
Having studied all available documents, he realized that each Mayan sign should be read as a syllable, not a single letter or word. So, he proposed a system for reading the entire language. In 1952, Knorozov wrote a paper on his method and received a PhD degree.
Soon, the whole world learned about Knorozov's discovery and he was even allowed to travel to several foreign conferences from the otherwise closed USSR. However, he only saw the monuments of the Mayan civilization for the first time in the 1990s, already as an elderly man.
Although few people in Russia have heard of his name, he is still a real star in Latin America.

🌟 They are the incredible ones!
Our superheroes - veterans who stopped the rapidly spreading Nazism and human slaughter during the World War II. According to the data, only less than 14 thousand veterans are still alive in Russia. Whereas the human losses of the Soviet Union are rounded to 27 million people, most of which were civilians.
Almost all veterans talk about the spiritual awakening they experienced during the war years, despite hardships and grief. Not only they defended their Motherland, but also liberated the people of European countries from the Nazi dominance.
❤️ These veterans are luckily still among us. It is based on them that we can correctly build our attitude towards the Motherland and towards the need to defend our values.
🕊 We heartily congratulate everyone with the Victory Day and wish you health, well-being and peace!
____

Dear friends, we are glad to share with you the works of a talanted Indian artist Nishant Kumar Meena. He is the winner of Victory Dictation-2024 held in Delhi in English. As Nishant tells, he draws his works being influenced by the Heroic deeds displayed by the Red Army soldiers during the Great Patriotic War. "Also I am quite fascinated with all the war memorials: Rear-front monument at Magnitogorsk, Kursk Battle memorial, Motherland's Call at Mamayev Kurgan, the Victory Obelisks in all the Hero Cities, and of course the Fortress of Brest", he confessed.
