🎭 Theater was the main entertainment of nobles in the 19th century in Russia. They loved performances both in large theaters and at home, staged independently. Let's talk about the nuances of such entertainment.

Amateur performances were staged in the countryside estates. The whole family and sometimes the servants carefully prepared for them: they thought many times about how and what to play, held rehearsals, and sometimes even sold homemade tickets. Residents of the estates invited their relatives and friends to the performance.

💰 Organizing productions required financial costs, sometimes significant. Funds were obtained in different ways: they attracted “patrons” - wealthy friends, or expected “grants” - cash gifts from relatives.

This is how the writer Ivan Turgenev recalled how they prepared for the performance in his home theater: “From morning to evening there was smoke like a yoke: ballet scenes were being staged, costumes were being tried on. Noise, din, laughter, merriment!
