👨🚀 March 9, 2024 marks the 90th birth anniversary of the first human in space — Yuri Gagarin.
In 1959, having learned about the recruitment of candidates for testing new flight equipment — future spacecraft, he, a young Air Force pilot, wrote a report asking to be included in the test group. Already in October 1960 he began preparing for his spaceflight.
🚀 On April 12, 1961, the Vostok 1 spacecraft piloted by Yuri Gagarin launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and after completing one revolution around our planet successfully returned to Earth.
📆 The date of the spaceflight was declared a holiday — the Cosmonautics Day.
The flight, which lasted 108 minutes, forever entered the history of mankind and made the young major a world celebrity: in 1961-1964 he visited about 30 countries, including India, and was awarded with many foreign decorations.
💬 “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is”, recalled Yuri Gagarin later.
❗️ Gagarin’s spaceflight secured the Soviet Union’s leadership in space exploration, although for many years this achievement became a victory not only for the USSR, but also for the entire humanity.
