🗓 On April 10, 1944, exactly 8️⃣0️⃣ years ago, the forces of the Third Ukrainian Front under the command of Army General Rodion Malinovsky ousted Nazi German and Romanian invaders from Odessa.
🕯 The Nazi occupation of the city lasted 907 days. During this period, approximately 200,000 people died in Odessa and in the region. Many of them fell victim to mass bloody massacres and brutal executions. About 78,000 people were deported to Germany for forced labour; plants and factories were destroyed; and over 2,000 buildings, including hospitals and schools, were blown up or burned down.
During their retreat, German and Romanian troops shot at ordinary people, including the elderly, women and children and mined the most important buildings, plants, the power station and the seaport.
⚔️ The Red Army inflicted a crushing defeat on the enemy with over 27,000 soldiers and officers killed and more than 11,000 taken prisoner. The enemy also lost 952 artillery pieces, 443 tanks and assault guns, and 97 ammunition and food depots.
The liberation of Odessa by the Red Army disrupted supplies to the German army group in Crimea and opened the way to an offensive towards the Balkans.
During the entire period of occupation, local citizens resisted the Nazis. After the city was captured, they went into catacombs. During the war, Odessa underground fighters and partisans destroyed over 5,000 enemy soldiers and officers, 248 motor vehicles, and saved about 20,000 Soviet citizens from being forcibly exported to Germany.
In honour of the liberation of Odessa, 324 artillery pieces made 24 salvoes in Moscow.
🎖 The honorable title of Odessa units was conferred on 27 formations and units that distinguished themselves during the operation. The title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded to 14 people and over 2,000 people received Soviet orders and medals.
On May 8, 1965, Odessa was officially declared Hero City.

✍️ President Vladimir Putin sent his greetings to Russia’s Muslims on Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
💬 Over the centuries, Eid al-Fitr has come to symbolise for Muslims the joy of renewal, an aspiration to become better, and the purity of thought and deeds.
Muslims in Russia cherish the rich historical, cultural and religious traditions inherited from their ancestors. They come together as communities and families to celebrate this holiday and help those in need in keeping with their forefathers’ legacy.
☝️ Muslim organisations have been playing a proactive role in our society by undertaking important patriotic, educational and charity initiatives. They have been successful in working with the state and civil society with a focus on educating the younger generation, supporting participants and veterans of the special military operation, as well as their families. They have also been instrumental in strengthening the unity of our people and preserving inter-ethnic harmony.

💬Ambassador Andrei Kelin to TASS news agency (April 9, 2024):
▪︎Lofty declarations by David Cameron and Stephane Sejourne regarding the Franco-British "Entente", in fact, clearly reflect their opportunistic nature.
▪︎The central notion of the British-French proclamation - that Ukraine's defeat will also be the West's loss - is puzzling.
▪︎Neither the article for the Daily Telegraph nor other statements by these officials explain what exactly this loss will entail. And this is understandable.
▪︎After all, it would be difficult to explain to ordinary readers why they should be worried about peace finally coming to Europe and their taxes no longer being wasted on keeping the corrupt Zelensky regime afloat.
▪︎Unsurprisingly, both ministers have shied away from pointing out the terrorist nature of the Kiev regime in their article. They are again trying to attribute to ISIS the responsibility for the dreadful terrorist attack in the "Crocus City Hall". They are doing their utmost to ignore the renewed shelling of the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant, which is fraught with truly catastrophic consequences for all European countries, including the UK and France.
▪︎Reading between the lines, it is crystal clear who the real “losers” would be. Not Western countries, but rather their leaders, who have made a plainly erroneous bet on supporting Kiev when it unleashed a war against Russians in its own country and against Russia itself.
▪︎They are the ones having real difficulties in extricating themselves from this situation without loss of face. Hence their desperate attempts to salvage their reputation.
❗Apparently, by simply doing more of the same in the Ukraine crisis, Tory leaders intend to refrain from realistically assessing the situation, so as to toss this "hot potato" into the hands of the future government as a source of permanent budget expenditures and reputational costs. Whether their successors will pick up the tab is, of course, up to them.

🚀 On April 12, 1961, at 09:07 Moscow time, the Vostok spacecraft with pilot-cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on board blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, marking the beginning of the space age in the history of mankind.
Yuri Gagarin spent 108 minutes in space, making a complete orbit around the Earth, and successfully landed near the village of Smelovka in the Saratov Region.
While in orbit, he maintained radio contact with Earth, made observations through a porthole, controlled the operation of the ship's systems, and carried out simple experiments.
📰 Even his wife did not know about this feat. The news about Yuri's flight came out only 55 minutes after the launch of the Vostok rocket, becoming the most quoted report in the world. Overnight, the Soviet citizen became the most famous man on Earth.
Two days later, many thousands of people with flowers and welcome posters took to the streets of Moscow, honouring the cosmonaut who had arrived in the capital. At the end of April, our compatriot went on a foreign tour, travelling through more than 30 countries in two years, where he was welcomed as a hero.
💬 Sergey Lavrov: For billions of people around the world, Yuri Gagarin continues to serve as an example of heroism and selflessness, inspiring them to overcome any obstacles in pursuit of the most ambitious and noble goals (Minister's video message on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's space flight).
Gagarin's flight embodied the triumph of Soviet science and technology and was of crucial importance for further development of space exploration and the mankind.
🌐 In 1968, the 61st General Conference of the International Aviation Federation decided to celebrate April 12 as the World Day of Aviation and Astronautics, and in 2011, at the initiative of Russia, the UN General Assembly proclaimed April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight.

🚀12 April marks the International Day of Human Space Flight - the annual celebration commemorating the first human space flight by Yuri #Gagarin, which took place #OTD in 1961.
During his 1961 trip to the UK at the invitation of the Foundry Workers' Union in Manchester, Yuri Gagarin met Her Majesty The Queen and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
A number of places commemorating the heroic deed of Yuri Gagarin are scattered across the UK, which include: his statue at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, a memorable plaque at Manchester Airport, Gagarin’s bronze bust at the Science Museum in London. Several streets around the UK also bare his name.
The first British astronaut Helen Sharman, who was also the first woman to visit the «Mir» space station in May 1991, once said: «Wherever we go in space, and whatever we do there, we stand on the shoulders of Yuri Gagarin».
