UNESCO Monument - Virgin Komi Forests
A real treasure trove of taiga, the virgin forests of the Komi Republic were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995, the first of Russia's natural monuments. The area of Komi forests is 3.28 million hectares, they stretch for more than 300 km along the western slope of the Circumpolar and
Northern Urals. The Pechoro-Ilychsky biosphere reserve with a buffer zone and the Yugyd Va National Park are located on this territory. On average, they are visited by almost half a million tourists a year.
It's the largest preserved area of northern taiga in the whole Europe, almost untouched by man. Pine and spruce, birch and larch are neighbors in the forests of Komi. Large rivers Pechora and Ilych flow in the swampy valleys, and originate in the crystal clear streams of the mountain slopes. The Ural Mountains seriously influence the natural diversity of the local forests. It is like a boundary that separates the Siberian flora of the eastern slopes from the typical European plants in the west of the Urals. There are many rare and endangered animals and birds included in the Red Book. Deer, stoats,
martens, brown bears, golden eagles, white-tailed eagles - researchers have counted more than 40 species of mammals and 204 species of birds here.
The nature of the park and the biosphere reserve is also attracting to archaeologists and paleontologists: here they found the Upper Paleolithic site and the largest in the whole north of Europe location of ancient animals: mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, tiger-lion.
