I still carry the scent of jasmine from the afternoons I spent lying beneath the sun, tracing shapes in the clouds and imagining the kind of love that did not have to speak loudly to be real; every poem I wrote in the margins of my notebook when I thought no one would ever understand how big my heart felt still lingers with me. I can still feel it in the way I notice things—like the way a flower leans toward the sun or how someone’s laughter sounds when they are not holding back.
There is a certain kind of softness in being young and curious, in braiding daisies into my hair as if they could keep my thoughts gentle. I did not know much about the world, but I knew how to love things quietly, like the way I loved the wind brushing through tall grass or how the sun made everything golden for just a moment before it slipped behind the hills.
