A two-day workshop on designing and soldering a synthesizer based on the 40106 chip.
Two days to understand how sound is born, build your first circuit, and turn electricity into music.

Day 1 — theory and experiments on a breadboard: components, circuits, light, body, graphite.
Day 2 — soldering and modifying MICRORACK Synth MFOS module, and making finished device that you’ll take home.

No prior experience required. All materials are provided.

Led by Polina Shmonina — media artist and synthesizer builder, curator of phatch lab.

Supported and hosted by Andrey Strokov and Leo Gomberg - founders of MICRORACK Synth.

Together, we built Microrack-based @microrack synthesizers and explored how electricity turns into sound.

— types of synthesis: FM, wavetable, additive, subtractive — how they differ and sound

This lecture is dedicated to how software in hybrid modules is built — from overall architecture to working with audio and control signals.

We will cover:
— the architecture of a hybrid module’s software layer
— real-time code vs. non-real-time code: what the difference is and how they interact
— audio and CV processing: principles, constraints, and practical approaches

We will talk about how to write reliable software that stays synchronized with hardware, meets timing requirements, and robustly handles audio and control signals.

“Designing Wavetable Oscillators and Samplers” — Lecture #4 of the Hybrid Modules course

In the final lecture of the course, we dive into the wavetable approach — one of the most flexible and expressive methods of synthesis in hybrid modules.

We’ll break down how a wavetable oscillator works: how the table of waves is constructed, how scanning and interpolation function, and what limitations and advantages hardware implementations have.

We’ll explore FM, AM, and PM modulation in the context of wavetable signals — how they differ, how they behave in real time, and what kinds of sonic structures they can create.

We’ll also cover the role of the sampler in hybrid systems: buffering principles, real-time playback, pitch control, loops, and modulation.

This lecture ties together the key topics of the course — architecture, real-time code, and signal processing — showing how all elements work together inside a modern hybrid module.

Nikolay Golikov — systems and embedded software engineer, artist, and experimental musician.
