Device Directory Table

Hello Everyone,

I am currently stuying the part about devices directories in Linux system, and i thought ill make a list of all Device directories to refer back to when needed.

I made the below table listing all essential devices in Linux that you need to know about, while containig the category of these devices, naming, directory and the type of variable they use in their naming (replacing the * with the corresponding numrics or letters. e,g: /dev/sd* > /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc... and so on).

Thought that i should share this list, and i hope this can be useful to anyone who's looking for a simplified listing of all devices and having them in one place.

What's your favourite music streaming software/YouTube music client?

I've been searching for ways to remove my monthly subscriptions but one I still have is Spotify, it's comfortable and works on multiple platforms and since I only pay 3'50€ monthly due to having a family plan I fear the change isn't worht it (that's why I ended up forgetting about self hosting).

One of my friends recommended ArchiveTune for Android which I'm really liking this far. It looks clean, looks easy, functional and it's receiving updates so now that I have the streaming on my phone covered I'm left with my desktop.

I used the web app for YouTube Music with uBlock via LibreWolf and it's working for me so far but ngl, the UI... Could be much better... Especially coming from YouTube.

So I'd appreciate it if you shared what you use to stream music on your desktops (without counting self hosting software or local file players)!!

How shared memory actually works in Linux

Had some free time recently so I made a visual explainer on how shared memory actually works in Linux.

Normally, two processes have completely separate virtual address spaces. Process A shouldn't be able to touch Process B's memory at all.

But with shared memory, one process can write a value and another process can read it without copying the payload between them.

The video goes through virtual memory, page tables, physical frames, shm_open, ftruncate, mmap with MAP_SHARED, lazy allocation, and what actually happens when either process touches the mapping.

I also get into related mechanisms like memory-mapped files, shared libraries, copy-on-write after fork(), zero-copy IPC, and eventually Dirty COW and what can happen when these page-table tricks go wrong.

I built a quiz that doesn't tell you which distro you "are": it hands you a complete Linux blueprint and a prompt to walk you through the switch

The site is yearoflinuxdesktop.org \- part manifesto, part quiz, part blueprint generator.

The idea: instead of another "what distro am I?" personality test, it maps your hardware, your tolerance for tinkering, and what you still need from Windows/macOS onto one of ten archetypes (The Civilian gets Linux Mint, The Arch Wizard gets Arch + Hyprland, The Gamer gets Bazzite, etc.). Then it writes you a copy-paste prompt you can feed to any LLM to walk you through the install step by step.

What might interest this sub: the scoring engine is one dependency-free JS file that runs identically in the browser and in a build harness. The harness brute-forces all 16M possible answer combinations on every deploy to verify that named personas land where they should and that guardrails hold (e.g., terminal-phobic users can never receive Arch). The quiz weights, the questions, and all ten archetype blueprints are plain JSON in the repo: MIT licensed, fork it, argue with the weights.

Linux CRU 0.2.0 - custom + stretched resolutions on Wayland (KWin, sway, Hyprland) and X11

Two years ago I made this as an X11 NVidia-only custom resolution tool. Finally did a proper rewrite. It now works on Wayland (KDE, GNOME, sway, Hyprland) and on AMD/Intel/NVIDIA, and it does stretched resolutions - the 4:3-stretched thing CS2/Valorant players use to widen models - on KDE Wayland, which the compositor normally refuses to do on external monitors.

Also fixed the AppImage, which turned out to be missing tkinter and wouldn't launch on half of you. Sorry about that.

I never thought I’d love Linux so much

I was always a windows person. It was simple, seemed safe, and I grew up on it, so it was just what I thought I’d always use.

Recently I’ve been really stuck on not upgrading to windows 11 (it sucks imo) and just stuck on windows 10, watching my computer slowly eat itself away to problems I didn’t even think were possible. Then once the steam deck came out, I knew I had to get it.

Portable computer with steam games I already play? Sign me up bro.. but after a few months of just gaming, and a little bit of messing around with desktop mode, I decided to really get into it and see what all the Linux fuss was about. I’ve heard a lot of people really prefer it over windows, and I wasn’t sure why, but man once I got into it I couldn’t stop.

I know it’s only a steam deck so the specs are not anything too crazy, but it feels so much better than my upgraded pc. Windows bogs it down so much a weaker pc feels better. And I mean, SO much better. It feels like when I first started getting into computers as a kid, everything was so fast and new to me.

It wasn’t too different from windows, besides being heavily unbloated, giving me a lot more control over what I do, and the discover software center on my gosh. I don’t know why everything isn’t based on Linux at this point, it’s SO much better with the app quality. (Well, I do know why but everyone should switch to Linux!) And the community seems so much more organized and passionate about this OS, it makes me feel cozy almost. I don’t think I can ever go back to windows again.

TL;DR, windows slow, little control, makes me sad. Linux fast with more control, makes me happy.

Floorplan software?

I used Sketchup in Windows to create floorplans for various projects - is there an equivalent for Linux? Preferably free open source.

I have FreeCad but it's a bit complex to learn and use, would prefer something simpler.

OpenSSH 10.5 released, AI Welcome
