with more powerful ultrabooks, whats stopping most people from working with different VMs aside from software licence cost?

For example:

win10 host machine running vmware WKS with 3 guests:

1. one guest for office apps like email
2. one guest for development tools
3. one guest for browsing

leaving the main host to just be a transit area and VM backup storage.

the benefit I see are:

1. you can easily backup each VM and if something goes wrong or you get a virus through email or some sort; just delete the vmdk and paste a backup.
1. break one guest; and the others are isolated and unaffected.

cons:

1. battery
1. overhead of 4 OS running on the same hw
1. price of multiple software licenses that could have only been one.

Infrastructure as Code: Best Practices

Not sure if this is for here however I have been looking in to some IAC concepts and I was looking in to scripting the provisioning of development environments.

Currently I am using azure stack. We have environments that need spinning up weekly for our development team and this means a lot of time spent provisioning. I was looking to use the Azure ARM templates to provision the servers then PowerShell DSC to configure SQL and the Web Server. I was wondering if anyone has any tips of experience they can share on this.

What I want to provision is:

1 - SQL Server, SQL 2019 with our custom configuration

1- Web Sever, IIS/NODE/Custom Fonts

1- CRM Server

I'm looking at ways I can spin all of this up with a new naming convention and IP config for each environment and VM.

example:

Is there any best practices I should follow or anything to watch out for as someone doing this and planning this for the first time?

How VMware changed its own destiny with the rise of containers?

Smart move, but still, the vision is missing?

Once VMware ruled the virtualization world, but approached a little later when it comes to containers. VMware containers' 6% market share lags far behind leaders such as IBM's Red Hat at 44% and Docker with 23%.

VMware was a bit of hesitant to go on with containers initially until it saw the real tech moving towards containers altogether.

But wait, VMware is smart; it gradually made some moves to adjust itself with the market so it can compete with the containerization market really well and strong.

Instead of rebuilding the wall, it made a series of acquisitions, VMware acquired Heptio and bought Bitnami, both targeted towards Kubernetes market. Additionally, VMware partnered with Pivotal and then purchased it in December 2019.

What's your view on this?

can with items and loop ansible create commas separator ?

i have create a task for mount point using loop and with items. I want to know if it is possible to create comma separator. If there is how can i do it , I mean this ansible output : 2.68gb, 2.35gb, 6.98gb

I tried join filter, it didn't work.

How can I get only total size on mount point?

I use dh -f | awk {print $1} on shell command in ansible but its comes with total size and file system name. In linux command, it comes out only total size, how can i get that from ansible command?

What's a good DevOps cert path: Deciding between CCNP Sec, or DevNet

I just jumped out of being Defense related (USAF, US Navy, government employee, contractor, etc) and back into technology/IT field, specifically Test and Measurement. My previous tech experience was as a SysAdmin for Sprint PCS where I managed a few hundred Solaris 8 boxes for maintenance and 3G (PCF) data service. I did also manage 2G servers for awhile but I was really glad when another group took those Windows server crap boxes off our hands. No more 3am wake ups because someone enabled screen saver which made the server stop working for some stupid reason.

Now, I support cyber testing and network (layer 2/3) transport measurement for my new employer. I was required to get a CCNA, which I completed a few weeks ago. I'm wanting to plan for the future and am trying to understand the future paths I can follow regarding certification, and how to dovetail it with my strengths, experience and interests. I believe DevOps fits, and specifically, using DevOps to automate security pre and post-testing. I see after Feb 24, 2020 there is a DevOps cert, and I specifically was thinking of taking the exam: Automating and Programming Cisco Security Solutions v1.0 300-735 [https://developer.cisco.com/certification/exam-topic-security/](https://developer.cisco.com/certification/exam-topic-security/)

However, I'm not quite sure how that works within taking the CCNP and specializing (if that's an option), or jumping off the CCNx path and over to DevOps, DevNet or whatever is the right term. In my background at Sprint, we looked to automate configuring and deploying servers. I'm hoping there are things similar to applying security across the enterprise.

If you were making this decision, which route would you follow? CCNP Security Certification or DevNet Professional Certification

How do you migrate existing infrastructure from Docker to Kubernetes?

I had two servers running various Docker Compose projects (well, technically they are all Portainer powered). Now I had some success story with Kubernetes (specifically, it's k3s), I've got ingress & inlets working, now I want to move my current infrastructure to k8s so that I can have that nice horizontal scaling.

However, I had no idea how to migrate it, that there is no way to upload Docker volume as a persistent volume, the rest could be easily handled with some modification of outputs of Kompose. At least hidr them secrets please.

I used to migrate my old SonarQube compose file. That "works" until I got database error. Now database migration is less PITA as I can at least dump SQL files into different places and rerun them on my own. What's youe story of dealing those situation otherwise?

Automatically generate terraform code by scanning your cloud

Hey everyone, I hope many find these useful.

I found this CLI tool called [terraformer](https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/terraformer) which scans your cloud and generates terraform code. The auto generated code looks a bit weird so I created another CLI tool called [terrafactor](https://github.com/Ghost---Shadow/terrafactor). It refactors the terraform code to make it a bit more readable. Finally, I also created a [visualizer](https://github.com/Ghost---Shadow/terraform-board) to make sure it did its job.

Overcoming YAML Pain in Continuous Integration

Hi everyone, this is my first post in /r/devops. I’m very passionate about build systems and continuous integration. A few years ago, I started developing my own build system, with the goal to solve problems of existing solutions, but also to be more able to research on my own ideas (usually that doesn’t work well with other peoples code :)).

Anyway, my post is titled “Overcoming YAML Hell In DevOps”. Please don’t scream at me! I’m a .NET developer, hence, the title is a little broad for this sub, but in essence, it’s about continuous integration and authoring pipelines. More concrete _generating pipelines_ from an existing C# implementation of the build. If you are re-creating whole Kubernetes cluster on deployment, how do you deal with persistent storage?

Hi, I remember seeing someone mentioning that they would do deployments by re-creating whole kubernetes clusters. As much as I like they idea, I can't figure out how to deal with persistent storage in that pattern.
Does it mean you're using completely separate infrastructure for that, such as RDS, or is there another way? I mainly would like to ask if there are any options to use this pattern while having some persistent data on the cluster being re-created - thank you!

Worst or Best DevOps automation

Generally intrigued... I find people are fairly proud of automations that don’t really help much and largely ignore really beneficial automations... case in point:

My (once) proudest moment:

I once wrote a python script that watched syslog for configuration change notifications and auto generated change tickets in the ticketing system. The purpose was not to document work but to annoy my my director who had decided anytime we type config-t a change must be created. His approval of the change took more work than the changes I was making (which were hundreds a day)... shitty I know.

However, TIL that a vbscript I wrote 12 years ago in excel to ping a hostname or IP in a cell in excel is used by several large consulting firms and was asked to update it to work with 64-bit excel on windows 10.

So any good (or bad ones) out there?

Recommendation for web monitoring/alerting

I know there are posts already asking for this info, but many of the suggestions are cloud based.

I'm looking for an on-premise solution for web monitoring/alerting. I need to monitor internally developed websites to ensure they are up and working (IIS) and alert if issues are found. No cloud, only on-prem. Thanks.
