When just starting out as a startup, what's the most affordable storage service do you recommend when developing apps?

I am working on a music and movie streaming service for my country but I don't know what would be the most affordable, scalable and efficient storage service for my platform. At first I was thinking either firestore or AWS but companies like Spotify use like Hadoop so I would like to hear your own opinions!

How to actually get good at basic DevOps if i'm not already hired

I'm a full stack developer. and i recently was interested in getting into the devops world. learned about docker, clustering, kubernetes but only the very basics, like tutorials level basics. How should i actually get good in Devops if i'm not working for a company that requires me to solve such problems? as a developer, i would just build stuff and scale it since theyre just apps.

CI testing Linux/Windows integration

I have a application that interfaces with a Microsoft SQL Server database. I can test it on Appveyor under a complete Windows environment. However, I would also like to try testing the code on Linux, while some SQL Server is also out there on a Windows test environment. I know Appveyor does have Linux testing containers. Does anyone know if there is a way to sync two test containers up, one Linux, one Windows to try this? If not, any suggestions on workarounds?

Spot instance and custom domain

Hi, apologies if this is not the right sub.

I have a custom domain and currently and EC2 instance server where the application is hosted. Long story short, it's only used a few times a month but I am still paying for the "unused time".

I decided to change it to a spot request instance but I am confused with something: can I point my domain to this instance ( I have an Elastic IP associated with it)? What happens when the instance is not "allocated"?

Dockerfile linters wanted!

Looking for some ideas for Dockerfile syntax linters and how they integrate in your CI flow. Do you use one? Are you happy with it or do you see shortcomings in using it?

I've found hadolint ( [https://github.com/hadolint/hadolint](https://github.com/hadolint/hadolint) ) and am trying it out locally at the moment. Curious if you have experience with this one or with other Dockerfile linters.

Where do you integrate it into your CI? Local git-hook before pushing to repository, remote git-hook on PR or build stage in CI? Why?

Docker and Sonatype got acquired, what next?

Recently, Docker got acquired by Mirantis and Sonatype Nexus got acquired by a private equity firm. The future of these firms may not be the same and we cannot predict anything since the ownership has changed.

Looks like Docker has gone into the good hands, Mirantis helps companies run Kubernetes and OpenStack with ease and the addition of Docker surely feels like an enhancement in the cloud-native field. But it also concludes that Docker won’t be Docker anymore, like all acquisitions, strategic business objectives will change and this might also affect some microservices developers.

But when it comes to Sonatype Nexus, an equity firm buying it makes no sense to me as a developer.

What can be the future of container registries?

I have one month to prep for a mid/senior level Devops/full stack interview at Capital One

Has anyone gone through this? What was their focus? I am told it will be a full day of 5-7 interviews.

I have about 5 years experience, 2.5 in mobile app development, 2.5 in the systems engineering/devops space. I feel like I have a broad surface level knowledge of almost everything, but I don't know one thing particularly well.

My current goal is to review that Devops learning flowchart that's running around and fill in my gaps on that chart. I will probably practice a hackerrank problem every other day, as I know there will probably be at least one whiteboard session. I will probably review and buff up my AWS and infrastructure knowledge, as I can't currently do a VPC from memory.

What are on-site interviews for Devops like? Will I be asked to bring up a LAMP stack?

Really any general tips for an interview day like this would be appreciated.

Why Apps like Uber or Tinder need a lot of money to start? is the server cost high?

**Are server costs high? I'm asking to dev-ops people here because you are familiar with server usage and costs in general. I'm finishing to code my own Tinder app (it's for a specific niche, but maybe adoption grows a lot) because I don't have an initial investment like the successful known companies had maybe I'll fail. I'm not sure if I'm going to get money from my users so maybe I won't be able to pay for the server cost with my salary. I'm not looking to make profit with my project, I'm fine if I can pay for the server. I'm going to host it on AWS by the way.**

**I'm not looking for "the perfect answer" just what your dev-ops experience can say about the costs of hosting in general.**

Any advice on what's the best Scalable and Affordable database for a startup?

Consul KV or Vault KV?

So currently we have some microservices deployed with consul for service discovery and vault for a pki store. I'm not the devops man so I'm curious about both services kv stores. If I want to provide config values to a service, does it make more sense to use consuls kv store or vaults? And what is the difference in application between them?

Could I consolidate VPC stacks by importing a VPC value from another template?

I have to consolidate two vpcstacks...one is 3000+ lines, the other is 300+ lines. I did not create these templates, and they are not super modular...as a quick and dirty, could I import the 3000 line vpc template's vpcid into the smaller vpc template and call it a day? What would be the easiest way to do this? :) Thanks.

How do you deal with snacking at work, is it a problem ?

As Developers I know that it is not very easy to stay in shape and lose weight. Most people have one problem that can be difficult to deal with and that is having snacks around. I'd like to offer some tips that I personally use for this problem.

1. **Bring your own snacks that are healthy**
2. **Identify the times of the day where you get the hungriest and prone to snacking.** Schedule either a time for those particular times to go for a brief walk or eat healthy snacks that you bring to work that are filling (Oatmeal/fruit or a protein source is my favorite.)
3. **Get out of habit of going to the snack area.** Once you are in the habit of no longer going to the snack area, you will not be faced with this urgency. This will take couple weeks get used to. Make a commitment starting today and try to stay away for 2 weeks straight from the snack bar!
4. **Communicate to people around you** to stop offering snacks because you have decided to take care of your health! They might even hold you accountable and create more leverage!
5. **Implement a version of Intermittent fasting**. Once you decide that you won't eat until a certain period of time and the eating is just simply out of question, it will also mean that you won't be looking for snacks.
6. **Drink tea or coffee through out the day** (Tea is better since it doesn't have so much caffeine.) you will notice that it suppresses your appetite

Anyone handling terraform exports in a clever way?

My situation is we run a fairly large scale enterprise cloud project (round 140 different applications/teams) which is very very enterprise.

We built each appstack entirely isolated which means all states are separated and secure in each teams own s3 bucket. Due to terraform very unencrypted state file.

Now it would be very handy to have remote state access between stacks sometimes, but we don’t do this, because of the security aspect.

Does anyone have an elegant way to handle this? I’m assuming some kind of pipeline -> send exports to KV store or something to allow up to date sharing of data we wish to share between stacks.

What's the simplest way to run some of your code in a "cluster" fashion?

TLDR: How do I make a bit of my code work in a lightweight cluster-like fashion?

## Background

I'm using a mix of devops technologies (rancher, k8s, docker, chef, terraform, etc). Very multi cloud, multi-tenant, multi-region, etc.

Occasionally, I want some bit of my code to run in HA-style across all my clouds, regions, clusters, etc.

I can code this up myself (using some type of message bus, REST API, etc), but in the end I suspect I'll end up my own clustering software, which sounds like reinventing the wheel.

Is there a dead-simple way to take a bit of my code and "run it as a cluster"?

* All instances talk to each other
* There is one leader
* All requests are forwarded to the leader
* The leader handles all the requests & sends results back to nodes
* Data can be stored in a distributed manor

Basically like how hashicorp vault and others do clustering.

I'm imagining something like

in a loop:
if cluster.am_i_the_leader()
request = cluster.get_next_request()
result = parse(request)
cluster.save_data(result)
else
result = cluster.forward_request_to_leader(request)

Has anyone else done this for their code? Do you use a programming library/module, or use something like an etcd cluster via API?

Anybody else using Zoho in AU/NZ?

Mail stopped coming in yesterday about, 0600 UTC by the look of it.

452 4.3.1 Temporary System Error

(so, no it's not a DNS issue, well not on my domain).

I also had a complaint from somebody who was using IMAP that it suddenly stopped working.

Zoho support chat is down, rang AU support number and was only given to leave a message.

Anybody else using the `mx.zoho.com.au` `mx2.zoho.com.au` and `mx3.zoho.com.au` similarly afflicted, or is this isolated to me?

I can login to Zoho app, Webmail, and even send emails from it without issue, but all receiving emails rejected.
